YEAH  Mythbusters! Go 5 second rule, 0.1 seconds is enough to transfer pathogens though ..., I have dog and cat hair, dust, human hair, etc. in my house, so ... I usually throw anything that lands on the floor away, unless it's watermelon.

I do use the 5 second rule all the time.  We went camping one time and I dropped a chicken breast on the ground trying to take it off the fire pit.  I picked it up and rinsed it off and threw it back on the grill.  I ate it so no one else would have to. I know it sounds gross but I am still alive to tell about it.

when i'm at home i will let more things slide but let me tell ya....i used to work as a server and the cook at this place was HORRIBLE! he dropped chicken on that disgusting grimy greasy, crusty floor and he tried to plate it! i mean he didn't even try to rinse it off (which wouldn't have mattered anyway but still!) if i had not seen him do it and refused to serve the chicken, some unknowing person would have eaten that germ encrusted chicken and possibly gotten very sick! it was only the floor for about 2 seconds but i was disgusted at the thought that anyone would eat that.

Ewwwwwww  let me know where you worked so I'll never patronize that place.  I'm very leary about what goes on behind the beautiful atmosphere in the kitchen.  I worked as a head Bookkeeper for an upscale restaurant and some of the horsing around things I saw the chefs do in the back made me want to eat nothing but salads.  Great Chocolate Mousse though.

I don't care once it hits the floor, then it's no good. I know I won't eat it, just think what's on the floor where everyone walk's.(feet)

It really depends on what it is, and where I dropped it. If it's icecream then you can bet your keister I'm throwing it out. lol.
