NEW SCAM HITTING FACEBOOK!!!
« on: July 17, 2010, 08:51:47 am »
Below I have posted from my internet security that I use on my computer that gives me updates on what is going on and what to avoid and this is one thing I hope you didn't get into if your on Facebook.  I'm not a face book user so I didn't have to worry but I wanted you all to know.  I think its ok for me to post this because I'm not trying to sell or make money off of this,.  Just trying keep people from falling prey to this spamming.

OMG! OMG! DON’T FALL FOR FACEBOOK SPAM!!
It can cost you $9.99 per month on your phone bill

There seems to be an increasing amount of Facebook spam that spreads by social engineering – which is tough to stop since it’s Facebook users who are being tricked into “liking” the site (and reposting the spam five times if they pursue the following.)

We’ve found a lot of them. This one’s typical. The whole point of the exercise is to trick you into giving away your phone number so it can be billed something like $9.99 per month and send five of your friends to the same site to do the same. Oh, and show all your Facebook friends that you “like” a spam site

First you get a message from a friend that looks something like this:

picture want transfer

Note that somebody got paid (per click) for sucking in over 16,000 people on this one.

The gig is that you’re supposed to “like” this then share the text they give you.

After you fall for that you “click here” to see who viewed your profile.

Then the “verification” launches you into one of those endless surveys (you get a choice of six) the point of which is to collect your cell phone number so you can be billed $9.99 per month.

And, if you’re running Firefox’s Adblock add-on to protect you from such crap, these folks will even help you disable it!!

And after all that, here is your prize. Everybody seems to get the same one:

Thanks Wendy and Matthew.

this actually happened to me...not sure if it was from facebook but i'm pretty sure it was. but i "liked" a certain page in order to get some bonus on one of the games and i went through all the mess and i didn't get a bonus. invited friends published everything on my wall and BOOM i'm getting charged 9.99 month on my cell phone bill!

i called my cell phone company and the rep said it happens all the time. she fixed it for me but she said if i ever get a weird text that appears to be spam to text the word "STOP" back to that number and if it is a subscription i unknowingly signed up for then i should receive a text back that says i will no longer be charged. she gave me the number to text stop to and sure enough i got texted back.

i don't enter my cell phone number so lightly anymore!

I try not to "like" anything where I don't already know what it is.  Also, I NEVER enter my cell phone number anywhere-once someone has your number, it can act just like a credit card!  They can bill you for whatever they want.  The cell phone companies need to change that!!

There's a similar scam on Craigslist, where somebody contacts you about a sale, and they give you a link to a webpage asking you to submit your contact info there so they can get back with you.  The page submits your cell number to one of those scammy text message services instead.

I get so upset when FB gets hits with scams.  My young neice is on to chat with her friends and I am always afraid she will click on something.  Once she got into trouble because her cellphone company sent her a text telling her she had free internet.  SHe did not realize after 30 days it was MAJOR money to go the internet.  Her dad was very ill in the hospital and they ended up with a whopping $3000 cell phone bill.  Luckily the company helped out when my SIL sent copies of the hospital records and the free internet text sent to a 13 year olds phone.

I never do those things, most times you can just tell its a scam. It drives me crazy that someone out there really think we're that stupid...
