Computer questions???

K I am not dumb when it comes to computers but some thing baffle me..K I have a Compac computer and had it redone around Feb due to slow issues..Well it was great for a day and now the old *bleep* laptop I use runs faster and better then something I had my computer guy fix (he is a friend so I trust him or I thought I did)..Now I cleaned out everything I do daily if I am on it.My computer guy fixed it so I could download and play my games on there with no issues but I have the same issues..Could it be my Ethernet cable? I ask this cause my hubbys computer which is a lot older than mine is fast and so is my laptop..I have noticed when I go on my desktop the lights on my modem and router go nuts..Any advice I do not want to feel like I spent money on something I do not want or can use??HELP

One thing that did that to my computer was the shop at home tool bar once i deleted it and the rebate thing that was next to it I had no more issues.  I also got rid of Norton as my antivirus due to it using up so much of my computers memory space and usage and changed it to Vipre by Sunbelt Securities.  They are more reasonable got 2 yrs  still cheaper for what norton whats for one yr.  Vipre doesn't pull down on your system either.  Mostly likely its something with a program i might be wrong but that was what my problem was with mine.  Hope this helps some I know not much.

2nd. what type of virus protection you have install
3rd. what kind of operating system you are running

now some additional info.....clik start ---->all programs--->Accessories--->Sytem tools----->and Disk Clean Up. Clean up all file on local disk C/

I agree.  A lot of computers are slow because of the anti-virus software they use.  I use Avast! antivirus because for one thing, it's free and works very well.  Another is that I barely even notice it's there.  It doesn't slow my computer down at all.  Hope it helps

I am not sure if I understood your post right, but it sounded to me like you were saying he cleaned it up so you could play games on it.  Don't know what kind out play but they can take up tons of space.  Do you have enough resources to run everything.  I know that my son has downloaded so much and installed so much on one of mine that I think it has slowed it down significantly.

Depend on what kind of games do you have. Perhaps you have a lot of programs running in the background that they take up processor power of your computer. My advice is just turn off everything and focus on doing one thing at a time.

I hope your computer guy didn't purposely or by accident give your computer a virus. Check your desk top computer see if you did any kind of changes on it or not. Get your money back & fire your computer guy. Don't give up & good luck.

Avg is my Virus protection
It is the free Avg same as my laptop
And Xp is the operating system
Programs I have convertX my printer,my camera,Nero,adobe,Winnrar,acrobat,and all the windows crap..Accessories what ever came with xp,System tools Defragment,Disk clean up and all that Jaz which I do once a week..

I download no games..They are all facebook apps and myspace apps and I am only in a game at a time

If it is the wiring -- ethernet or something inside the computer, it may be an easy fix.  The fact that your modem and router lights "go nuts" may be an indication of a significant download  -- maybe a virus -- maybe just a clitch.  Does it continue while you are using the computer -- or just when you start up?

I use Norton Antivirus and Security (2005) which has ad blockers and pop-up blockers options available.  Not sure whether your antivirus program has anything like that.  IE has it's own blockers that you can turn on and off (but there are still other IE blockers that I haven't figured out how to use).

If you do have toolbars and don't have a great need for them, remove them.  They do slow things down.

I recently had my Dell desktop circa 2003 upgraded, cleaned etal and it is working reasonable well.  I clean my temps and cookies regularly, but don't defrag the computer.  I have more problems with my dial-up connection then anything else and that slows everything down. 

I do download games from IWON (slow download), that have lots of ads (which slows everything down). I  use the ad blocker on NIS to improve operations.  I try to have 3 or 4 games going at the same time.  When the PC had only 512mk operating memory, the PC would often lock up -- now that I have 4 times that amt, the PC doesn't lock up, but the dial-up download can't keep up.

I'm interested in anyone's response to computer problems since the issue is universal -- even it the systems are so different.

Yes he thinks I am nuts or downloading which I do not..LMAO..Yes the entire time I am on my moden and router go nuts only when I am on my desktop not hubbys or the laptop and everything on laptop is the same as deaktop except operating system laptop is vista and desktop is xp

If you are using the same modem/router on the laptop as the desktop and the problem only occurs with the desktop, then the connection to the desktop or the desktop itself is the problem.

Run your antivirus program to check for obvious viruses.  Clear your temporary files and cookies and history with the IE Tools/internet options/delete function.  If you have cccleaner, run that.  If all that fails, take it back to  your computer guy and show him the problem.

I had to do that 4 times when I got my computer upgraded -- and finally, when he showed me how to solve the modem connection problem, it worked, and, knock on wood, it's still working okay.

Sounds like you need to take the desktop back to your computer guy and demonstrate what the problem is.  Hopefully, it is not a virus.  Good luck!
