That is a very tough question. I can only speculate on what I might do. I don't know if I could actually do what I feel would be right.

I am not sure there is anything you can do. Unfortunately, most people won't believe they are in a bad situation until something really horrible happens. My mom was in an abusive relationship and I tried to get her to leave him, but it only but a wedge in between us. The only thing I could do was offer my support and a place to go if she wanted to leave. If my friend was in a dangerous situation and her children were hurt, I would take it to the next level. She might hate me forever, but I would call human services for the children's sake. I know my friend would never speak again, but I would hope eventually she would see that her children needed to be safe. Of course, this would be horribly difficult and I don't know if I could do it. Before I went that far though, I would keep talking to her about it and telling her that I am concerned for her and her children. Then she would know that I am here and I care.

Well I see that the only thing you can do is try to convince them to get counseling and stress to them that the current situation is not the best situation for the children to be living in. Also, express the fact that wether they see it or not they are shaping who the children will become when they grow up and right now they are not setting the best examples for them. Whatever you do please do not make them feel guilty for things being the way that they are because that may lead to finger pointing and accusations that would only tear them apart further and make things go from bad to worse. It is a hard situation and I applaud you for trying to help but remember that only they can make the decision to help themselves, you can talk until your blue in the face and if they are unwilling to listen you are not going to do any good. Never hurts to try though.
