Magic Jack
« on: January 27, 2010, 06:38:18 am »
Magic Jack.  Do any of you use this?  I am trying to cut back on a lot of bills this year.  I already cut a lot of my cabl channels.  My son is not happy but he will get over it.  Would love to get rid of phone bill.  I have seen the commercials but not sure about it.  I do not know anyone that uses it.

Thanks for any responses.

Hello,

We use Magic Jack as our house phone and have a cell phone (Straight Talk from Walmart, you buy their phone then it's $45 + sales tax for unlimited talk, text, internet and information, they even connect you!)  Sorry, got sidetracked there, we're just very excited about this new find!

Back to Magic Jack.  You HAVE to have HIGH SPEED internet.  I think it is wonderful!  The only drawback is that you can't receive calls when your computer is not on.  You have voice mail and they will even send an email to tell you when you get a message, who it is from & how long the call is.

Hope this helps.

I have had some people tell me the reception was breaking up, but I think it was a bandwidth problem on their end or it would be on all calls. I love the voice mail and most of the time that's all I use. I just call them back on my Vonage line. It still gives me another number to put on my websites for $20 a year.

My family uses it. We bought it recently and its pretty good quality, you can't notice the difference. The only draw back I would say is that you need a computer online all the time with no interruption in internet service. Because if there is no power or an internet outage, the phone dies.

My mom has used Magic Jack for about 2 years now and she loves it.  I've been thinking about getting it myself.

I have had my Magic Jack for about six months now and I love it! We did have a slight problem about a month ago with the calls breaking up but all we did was unplug it from the USB port and plug it back in and Voila' -back in business. The only fault I would ever have about MJ is the customer support stinks. When I did have the problem,I could not find  real person-kind of like customer support for Google Adsense-None

How much is the phone service for Magic Jack ? If it is affordable, I would like to switch from AT&T because I do agree it is expensive just for local service ($30.00/mo. average) excluding long distance.  :confused1:

It's about thirty dollars a year. I love mine but don't try to get a hold of customer service-that part is a bit**!

Magic Jack - follow up to my original question
« Reply #11 on: January 29, 2010, 08:56:50 pm »
Thank you for all your answers.  Another question - can it be plugged into the back of a cable modem?  It has to be in a computer?  I have a cable phone line now - that breaks up so I don't see a problem there with that.  Same deal I guess has to do with bandwidth or something probably.

The power going out is another thing I am not worried about.  We only have portable home phones (all the phone jacks except one don't work - had the phone company and cable out multiple times to fix - no luck)  I do have Tracfone for emergancy purposes.  My husband is attached to his Iphone that his company pays the bill on - he never uses the house phone.  So it sounds like a good option for us.

Thank You again for all your answers.

Hmm never thought of that Old Buddy!  What a great idea. Its crazy how much we could save on our phone bill if we use technology smartly.

Someone asked about the Straight Talk phones from Walmart.  They have phones beginning at $40, one for $80 (this is the one we bought, Motorola flip phone and they have LGs in some areas), a $100 phone and if you want to go all out, they have come out with one that costs over $300.
We have had this for about 5 months now and LOVE it!!!  No problem with service.  It comes over the Verizon network.  I have to recommend this, it cut our bill in half and we don't have to pay all the government mandated fees and taxes, except for sales tax.
