jury duty

Has anyone here ever served on a jury? I have been called to serve. What does that mean?

I've never served but I got called to serve when I was pregnant.  Everyone I spoke to told me it was something I didn't want to do because it could take forever.  From what I understand you go through a screening process and if you are selected to be on the jury, you basically sit through a court case.  Beyond that I have no clue about details and all. I was called to serve, but after the screening process did not make it to sit in during the actual case.  The other time I was told to check my number was never called to go in and get screened.  I don't know if all states or areas are the same, but when I sat through the screening process I was paid for my day (a minimal amount and mileage that they said). 

Other than that I don't know.

i reported for jury duty and was nearly selected in a murder case, but I indicated that I would not have anyone to watch the kids and they allowed me to leave

I have been called upon to serve on federal and state jury duty. Each time, I appeared and ultimately was excused. Federal jury duty paid mileage and a small amount to show up. I think I ended up with $75.00 for the day. It really wasn't worth the 100 miles I had to drive. In Arizona, state jury duty pays only $12.00/day plus mileage. Being such a small amount, I got dismissed after a couple of hours and grabbed my $46.00 mileage check and got out. The coffee at the courthouse in Florence, AZ is awful.

You may never have to report. In my area you typically have a group number and a phone number to call the night before. If your group has to report you go. They pay you next to nothing for your time and give you mileage. If you don't have to report, that's it. My mom lives in a more rural area and has to call once a week for 6 weeks. Even if you do get called to report, you might not end up on a case.

I get called every year, but only made the jury pool twice. One time the defendant pleaded before we were to go in, and the other was a drug case in which I told the judge I couldn't be unbiased as the defendent was manufacturing meth in front of young children....

He was manufacturing, or you can't be un-biased because you believe in guilty before being proved so?

I've been called a bunch of times.  You usually have to call a number that will let you know if you need to appear or not.  If you do, you go to the courthouse (take a good book with you) and sit and wait to be called for jury selection.  Sometimes they fill the juries before you are called and you can go home.  They may call you and then the attorneys ask you questions to see if they want you. If the do, just hope its a short trial.  I always resent it but then I think that our system beats alot of others in the world and this little duty is a lot easier and less time consuming that "civic duty" in other countries!

I have received a  summons  several times.  The day before they supply you with a number to call to determine if its necessary for you to report in.  On several occasions I've had to go but all we did was sit around for hours being bored and being told you weren't needed.  They paid the great sum of $17.00.

i have never served on jury duty, but my adopted parents have, and what sucks is they aint allowed to tell anyone *bleep*, about what happened or what is going to happen

I served for about a week a few years ago.  It wasn't bad, and it got me away from my regular job, which was a nice break.

I have actually served on jury duty when I was 19. My very first time I was selected to serve along with the more worldly experienced, mature minded folks. Luckily it was a civil case. Back in the day they paid $5.00 a day for your service, now it's $15.00/day with mileage costs. It is especially true for high profile criminal cases you are not allowed to discuss the trial with any outsiders. For whatever reason happened, at the time I was thankful the entire jurors (including myself) for that particular case was dismissed. Nobody knew why, but I was grateful to be off the hook.

I was called to grand jury once. I went to the training and orientation. There were 20 of us and they chose 12 names. My name wasn't chosen so I was finished. Grand Jury sounded interesting because you would listen to a case and then decide if there was enough evidence to send it to a trial.
