what the heck?   there are 50 states and the district of columbia (doesn't count as a state and has no representation in the house/senate)

The District of Columbia does have representation in The House but not the senate. The house has one representative

The United States is compromised of 50 states to this day. There is also the District of Columbia which is not considered a state in and of itself; as well as various outlying territories.
