Walking Healthy during Covid19
« on: February 18, 2021, 01:55:46 pm »
 :cat:

Our local Gym is open but as a senior I'm at risk so I stay home and do some "Walking"  Read the benefits below!  :

t’s not just for working your legs!

Pop quiz: what was the first major motorless transport invented by humans? Carriages? Horseback? Nope, trick question; it’s walking. The ability to walk on two legs was one of the major evolutionary traits that separated our ancestors from their simian cousins, and that ability has carried us through the ages, not just in the literal sense, but in the health sense.

Obviously, going for a walk every day, whether outside or inside on a treadmill, is good for your legs and heart. But what you may not know is that daily walking can have lots of additional benefits, both on your body and mind. For instance, walking, much like most kinds of physical action, are a good stress reliever. Using your body to move gives your mind something to focus on besides life’s usual irritations. Less stress, among the other positive benefits we’ll get into in a moment, helps to protect you from the development of certain chronic diseases.

Going on a walk gets you blood circulating, which can help to lower your blood sugar level. This can be helpful if you live with diabetes, or just need to dial down after a big meal. Speaking of sugar, some studies have shown that regular walks can lessen cravings for sweet stuff.
A brisk walk will work your leg and lower body muscles, though it can also help to strengthen your bones.

This is very good info but I like to walk outside but not in these cold temps.  I don't get much done in that area during the winter months.  I volunteer at the soup kitchen and get some exercise that way.

Thanks for the info.  I rather walk than go to the gym.  I lose my enthusiasm if I have to drive to exercise.

Try to walk outside twice a day when weather permits or I use the treadmill at home.

My husband and I walk together every day, weather and aches/pains permitting.  We listen to oldies music while we walk or just talk. Last spring, I had about three places along the side of the road where I would put a dime or nickel out in plain view to see what would happen. There are kids in the neighborhood and lots of walkers.  My idea was to see if the coin was still there on my next walk, and if not replace it.  I just thought it would be fun and maybe brighten up someone else's day.  Most days the coins were still visible.  Occasionally they were missing.  I never did have any clue as to where they went.

Except for loud barking dogs, my walks aren't even that eventful!

Agree, I love to walk.  I live near a VA hospital that has a track and lots of open areas to walk in.  Also you feel safe because of police patrolsthere.

I live in an apartment complex.  I started walking in January just around my complex when I can.  We have had a few rainy days so I couldn't walk.  Today I walking 3.75 miles.

Weather permitting I take my big dog, meet my one friend who also has a big dog, and we take them for a walk.  Usually about an hour (if the weather is ok).

You can walk indoors, too. Look up Leslie Sansone on YouTube.
