I'm talking exercise, not food.  According to Nutrition Action newsletter, when 11 adults with overweight or obesity spent 9 hours taking an hourly stair-climbing "snack:---which meant briskly climbing 55 steps, so don't get negative---their blood insulin levels were 17 percent lower than when they spent 9 hours sitting.  Each "snack" only took 20 to 60 seconds.

Remember---high insulin levels are a risk factor for type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.  So maybe try an exercise "snack?"

I think this is an excellent idea for those who are able to climb stairs (although there are many diabetics who would find this snack difficult to consume due to physical inability to climb stairs in the first place).


What I don't understand is the purpose behind calling this a "snack" rather than simply what it is - exercise. Maybe trying to change the mindset of how someone chooses to look at regular interval activity, but it still feels a bit cheesy to call it having a snack.

They always said walking is good exercise but sometimes people need motivation.  It's great if you can climb stairs.

I agree walking helps a lot.  I take the dogs for a walk almost every day (not in the rain) and its good exercise, if you don’t have a dog just go for a walk.

Climbing stairs is really good exercise, but the bottom line is to "move" in any way you can, no matter what you call it!  My watch frequently reminds me that I've been sitting too long.
