DNA test results
« on: January 07, 2020, 02:26:21 pm »
Wow I was reading a story online about people who did those DNA tests to find out their heritage and found kind of distressing news (like apparently one person was switched at birth with another baby) dang I don't know if I would want to get that kind of news.

That would be horrible to find out, but at the same time, I guess it would be good to know. Maybe there would still be time to learn about your natural family.

it can be good or can be bad.  I think I will leave my DNA alone.  I'm pretty sure I'm not adopted,  I look exactly like my mom  LOL  and my daughter looks my mom also ,,,  so we are all good !!!

Yeah, I've never really been interested in the DNA stuff myself. I don't think I'd find any distressing news, but I also don't want to pay for something that will officially tell me that I am English, Scottish, Irish, and possibly German. You can look at me and tell that, LOL!!  :peace:

I'm not interested in paying for a DNA test.  It would be a shock to find out your family is not your family.  The parent may not know about the switched at birth situation but they know whether they adopted someone and should tell the person at some point and not let them find out in other ways.

not interested in paying for one...but i do have questions and have had all my life..my mama denies it..but stuff just aint quite right...i do look ,like my mama..but nothing like my daddys side at all..my sisters take after both mama and daddy..but with me..i am the oldest and there is a lot of unanswered questions...even my daddys side admits i have none of their traits or anything..i think they know but no one will say...i am 58 and my daddy is dead now and my mama isnt in the best health at 72..so its something i will never know and really may not want to know...

I have not had an interest in DNA testing.  My husband got an email from a Social Worker recently as someone is looking for their birth family and is reaching out.  My husband's aunt died several months before this search began.  Still checking details.....

I did it and this summer I had a cousin (2nd) reach out to me looking for info about her father who never knew she existed.  My 1st cousin (her father) died many years ago when she was about six and the family never knew she existed.  I was able to connect her with her aunt (my 1st cousin) who is her only living aunt from her father.  They had a brother but he died a few years ago.   I  sent her a pic of her father, grandparents and great grandparents and she was so happy.  Her and her aunt met last summer and they talk often.  She coming to the family reunion this summer.  I can't wait to meet her.  I feel really happy I was able to connect them so she could learn about and be a part of our family.

I guess it all depends on your purposes. I am into family genealogy and so I submitted a DNA kit a few years ago where I found a few interesting hits and shared some information with a few people. I went to a seminar shortly afterward and they suggested that anyone doing family research should consider asking a living relative from older generations to consent to a DNA submission - I guess because their results would be (even if just slightly) more concentrated to that particular source line. So I bought a DNA kit for my mom for Christmas this year and we are going to activate it and send in her spit hopefully this week!

But there are some potential privacy issues as well. I don't know the specific legalities as far as who might have access to the information. (I'm thinking specifically of law enforcement). If I submit my DNA to Ancestry or one of the other online genealogy services and unbeknownst to me - my first cousin is a serial rapist, it's quite possible that my genealogical purposed DNA could be used to drastically reduce the search radius to identify him. The same markers that flag all the Ancestry users who are closely and remotely related to me could also flag how closely I am related to that hypothetical serial rapist.

I don't know what warrant or consent may or may not be needed in that regard or if any 5th amendment issues would arise.  And between you and me, I'd be happy to rat out any of my relatives who turned out to be serial rapists... but not everyone necessarily sees it that way.

My husband and I did 23 and me a few years ago and didn't find anything too interesting. I did get an email from someone from China that said she was my 4th cousin. Not sure if it was legitimate or not. I replied to her email but never heard anymore back after that.
