Wisdom teeth
« on: January 08, 2020, 06:38:04 am »
Looking for others' experiences with wisdom tooth removal.  I was told 25 years ago that I had two wisdom teeth in the top (lucky for me, I never developed any lowers). I decided to just leave them alone since they weren't bothering me. There they sat for 25 years until the upper right one finally decided to make an appearance last summer.

I had it removed last Friday without much difficulty in the actual procedure itself. Worst part was the pre-procedure shots. The oral surgeon was able to do it with just a local anesthetic and I didn't need to be put fully out.

But ever since the numbness wore off Friday afternoon, I've been having a lot of sinus issues - which I knew beforehand could be a possibility. I went back to the oral surgeon on Monday and he confirmed that the tooth roots had likely infiltrated into my sinus. He gave me a prescription for amoxicillin to prevent infection and I go back in two weeks for a followup.

Has anyone else had this type of reaction and how long did it take you to feel back to normal? He told me to not blow my nose for 2-3 weeks - just snort it back up my nose. And if I have to sneeze to do it open mouth.  So I have to remember to carry a hanky with me everywhere!

My sinus headaches get pretty rough and are very light sensitive. But thankfully they are not constant.
Not looking for sympathy - just looking for shared experience and an ETA on the light at the end of my tunnel. (Right now, dark places are my friend and the light is evil!)

Sorry I can’t help you.  I had two wisdom teeth pulled years ago, and beside the bleeding, I had no problems.  I guess from hearing you, I was lucky.  I hope you feel better soon.

I didn't have a problem with my sinuses when I had my bottom wisdom teeth out but I had some other issues.  The side of my chin was numb for a very long time and it freaked me out a little because I looked up side effects and one of them was some kind of permanent type of similar disorder.  Fortunately it eventually went away. One bad thing though was that I was also given amoxicillin and after taking it I broke out in red bumps on my arm.  I went to urgent care and they told me I am now allergic to penicillin which I hadn't been before.

I had all four wisdom teeth cut out when I was 19 years old.
Have a wonderful day!

I had all mine removed in HS and I can't remember any issues afterward other than just soreness for a couple days...my process was pretty smooth and I was knocked out cold for my procedure....I hope it gets better soon....I'm sure it will...

I have had a broken ankle, broken rib, broken nose, broken wrist, broken foot, dislocated shoulder, dislocated thumbs, one eye set back half an inch, over ons hundred and seventy stitches in my leg, and kidney stones. The worst pain I endured was having four impacted wisdom teeth extracted. Two weeks on percoset, my eyes were messed up during that time and my sinuses have been messed up since. Some people cruise in and out of the extraction with no pain at all. I have only met two or three that had sinus problems. I have heard from several that had 'dry socket' which they did not enjoy but I am not sure what is involved with dry socket. Additionally, I like to eat and even after two weeks I had to be careful with my food choices.

Wow, wisdom tooth extraction was really the worst for you? I'm not doubting you, but I guess it is different experiences for different people. I haven't had all of your list, but obviously the wisdom tooth; have also had kidney stones and gall stones; and had my gall bladder removed a few years ago by a full open incision with a 2 day hospital stay. Also a few other associated odds and ends with my back and other mishaps requiring ER visits.

In all of that it was the kidney stones that were the worst pain for me.  I'm not liking it, but I am working through the current stuff relatively well.

UGetPaid, it sounds like a rough time with your wisdom tooth extraction!  Uff Da!  Hopefully the amoxicillin keeps infection away and any further complications.  Not being able to blow a congested nose sounds like a bad deal in itself.

I had a rather bittersweet experience having my wisdom teeth extracted. The oral surgeon gave me a lot of gas and also headphones with Billy Joel music (it was the early 80s!). So the actual extraction experience was rather pleasant, given that the gas made me HIGH, LOL!  But the after-experience was not so pleasant because I felt like my jaws had swollen pretty badly and I was so tired from the after-effects of the gas. So I slept for almost 24 hours afterwards.  :peace:
