I think the expiration date on a product is just the deadline to buy the product. Things don’t necessarily spoil on their expiration dates whenever applicable.

No it is the date the product expires.  Depending on what the product is.  Usually milk is not good past the date.  A day or so maybe.  People who say they drink it a month past the date are lying.  It will sour.  Same with a lot of other stuff.  Food does not last forever.  It does go bad.

If you look some things have a sell by date and an expiration date. 

I don't eat most stuff past the date.  Some canned stuff I will.  I also don't hoard tons of food like some people do.

Buy organic milk instead of regular: It lasts a whole lot longer.


Though priced higher than the conventional milk, organic milk is quite worthy for the bucks spent.

 Be it the nutritional significance of higher PUFA and omega-3-fatty acid content in contrast to regular variety that has more omega-6-fatty acid. It can last up to six months on the shelf unopened. This is because in the difference of treatment processes employed. Organic milk is processed using Ultra High Temperature (UHT) that kills all the bacteria. While regular milk is pasteurized this kills not all but the harmful ones.

 UHT treatment is given as the organic milk has to be transported to places where organic farming isn’t practiced.

I've heard that some foods are good past the best by date and that the best by date is an approximation so that foods might still be fresh depending on the circumstances so I'll eat them on occasion if they appear to still be fresh. I've had some cake mix past the sell by date and it came out fine too. Some foods last a bit longer because they are dry (like cake mix, rice, pasta, etc), but I don't think liquids or wet foods are as trustworthy with this. Milk occasionally will last longer so I will drink it, but if in doubt throw it out.

It depends on what it it, but I usually try not to.  When in doubt I throw out.

There are dates on products that are there for a reason.  It's understanding what the dates are for.  There is use by, sell by and expiration.  An expiration date is the only thing the FDA recognizes as far as food safety goes.  Use by or sell by dates are integrated for freshness of product.  Beyond that common sense must be applied.

It depends on what it is. If it is a dairy product, such as milk or cheese, no I do not. If it is orange juice, on the other hand, it still tastes pretty normal past the expiration date.

You have to be careful of eating, drinking expired foods and drinks.  I just threw out some expired food.

It depends how far pass the expiration date the  food is; I don't want to take the chance of getting sick; if it does not smell right i am defintely not eating.

Most food items (yes even some dairy products) are perfectly fine for a little while after their dates. Especially if the item has not been opened. And a lot of people mix up sell by, best by and use by dates, all of which are not the same thing.

No not me. I probably throw food away that is still good but if it is past the date it gets chucked out. My mom is deceased now but she would keep stuff way past date I guess because of growing up in the depression.

My son has a new fascination with checking the expiration dates on foods and went through the fridge and discovered half the lunch meat was a couple of days from expiration and didn't want  to eat it lol

Ironically, I stopped drinking milk because the white line started to appear around the top of the jug too quickly.

I do , because things will still be fresh milk I will just shake and it's like fresh for a few more days.

I absolutely agree; it depends on the product.

It depends on the product and if it is a "best when used by" or if it actually has an expiration date.
