Yep!  On 7/11 the 7-Eleven convenience stores give away free small Slurpees, the iconic frozen drink introduced in 1965.  It's going on now (11:00am to 7:00pm), but don't procrastinate because the Slurpee machine may run dry before 7:00 pm.

I like to get the word out because the original 7-Eleven store started out as a frame ice house storefront where Johnny Green could supply the neighborhood with a 25-pound block of ice for 11˘ back in 1927 at convenient hours as well as a few staples like milk, cheese and bread.  It became the site of the original 7-11; the building is still located across the street from my junior high school.  After I graduated from college my first job was at its headquarters, then known as The Southland Corporation, and run by the Thompson family.

Enjoy and slurp away!

Not to worry.  7-11s do this every year on July 11 (known as 7-Eleven Day), at least in the U.S. and Canada.  Actually, I'm not sure whether or not the international locations celebrate this day.

Even when I worked for the original company (7-Eleven is now a Japanese-owned company) I remember July 11 as being special.  “Thank Heaven for 7-Eleven” was a very popular slogan.  So, as the story goes, late in the 1980s Southland Corporation was the subject of takeover rumors even as they were expanding by building a new headquarters and office complex along U.S. Highway 75.  Sadly for the family the timing to undertake a buyout in order to take the company private was met with the ill effects of the stock market crash of 1987.
