Daniel Tiger Neighborhood
« on: June 25, 2017, 05:14:16 am »
This show is playing in the other room.  I just now realized the song they are singing.

Here is the background.  Daniel wants to do something he has been told he cannot do.  He is mad.  His mom tells him "you can't always get what you want".

So they are singing a song that says "when you don't get what you want stomp 3 times and make yourself feel better".

Example - he was just told he cannot have cookies.  So the solution "start stomping".  I would start busting a behind!

Seriously?  They are telling kids when you don't get your way to "stomp"  huff and puff and be a brat?  Wow.  Time to change the channel.

my grand daughter loves that show,,,,   she is16 months right now and loves the music and singing.   I don't think she really understands what the concept is,,,,   but she loves singing and music so she just stops and listens and dances to it. She loves animals also so I think that is another reason she likes the show.  But I agree to the stomping lol  that is not a good thing to do,,,  unless they are just saying get you madness out buy stomping your foot 3 times  :)   and then move on to something else.

I don't think that stomping your foot three times equates to huffing and puffing or being a brat. It seems like a healthy way to take care of your anger. Sort of like counting to ten for adults before they blow a gasket.

Spanking doesn't seem to me to be a good punishment for being angry unless the angry person acts improperly by kicking, biting, hitting, etc.

Three stomps does not seem like a basis for spanking. Who does that hurt?

Mr. Rogers may have seemed to some to be namby pamby, but he was able to help kids understand and cope with feelings that they neither understand nor know how to deal with.  :highfive:

Yeah, I like the show and I guess that is what they are saying.  But my point is if you tell your child no you cannot have the cookie and the kid gets mad and starts stomping his feet - that is not a good way to act.

I guess it is how you look at it.  If you tell your child "no you cannot have a cookie" and their response is to start complaining and stomping then yes that is bad behavior that needs to be corrected.  I know a girl who  had a daughter that use to do stuff like that (mostly when she was with her father - not the man she is married to) and the mother thought it was funny.  It progressed to when her father told her to do something she would flip him off.  Again, mother thought it was funny and cute.  As a pre-teen this girl was a monster.  At least once she physically hurt her mother because she did not want to do what she was told.  She has been caught shop lifting from Walmart and been in front of a judge more than once.  The cop that was trying to help her - yeah she looks at him and says "F*** you".   As a teenager is is beyond being a monster.  She is out of control.  And how did it start?  Stomping her feet when she didn't get her way when she was a young kid.  Maybe if she had got her b*tt busted when she stomped her feet and pitched little fits she would not be on probation and on the verge of going to big people's jail for several years.  Just sayin'

Everybody has their own opinion and that is fine.  But personally, I do not think it is cute for a kid to stomp when they don't get what they want.  And I am not sure that show will be on in my house any more.
