Where can I buy good meat?
« on: August 03, 2017, 06:52:05 am »
The stuff sold in the stores are tough as shoe leather and have no flavor. What happened and why has this happened? It was never like this less than 10 years ago. Even Omaha Steaks meats are tough and have no flavor recently, so I will no longer buy from them.

Hamburger doesn't even have a meaty flavor like it used to. What are they doing to the animal's feed, way of raising them, and/or the processing plants that have changed?

Another good option - especially this time of year is to go to a county fair where they auction off cows or pigs. Unless you have a very large family or regularly feed at large gatherings, you would need to go in on it with several other people because just a single cow will yield way more meat that you can eat in a reasonable time.  We have done this a few times in recent years and the quality of the meat is quite good!  You would have to pay a local butcher to prepare the various meat products and would need an extra chest or upright freezer in the basement or garage to store it all, but it might be a good solution to your problem.

You could go to a private butcher shop, but that's pretty pricey. We have had a lot of luck at Costco in buying our meat. When we want an extra special treat, we buy expensive steaks there (which are really really good), but even their regular meat is better than our local supermarket meat.

Ever tried subscription to those cooking good meal companies. Well if the meat is not high quality as they say, well you got to get the proof and large cities do have labs to test stuff for the price, than sue the companies and those companies will be yours.

I don't buy  fresh meat from our grocery store, but will wait until I can go  out of town and then stock up on better quality of meat. Then I will freeze portions of it and  make sure I have  plenty for  a couple of months. Hurts the pocket book at first but in the long run  it works out and I have better meat.

I would look around for a good butcher shop in your area. I would stay away from your typical super market.

Like someone else mentioned, we've had good luck with Costco meats.   We also have a store here, The Fresh Market, and buy meat frequently from them.   Also, Whole Foods, a bit pricey but when it comes to meat I don't mind paying a bit extra for good quality.

Alot of animals aren't just getting the hormones, steroids & antibiotics pumped into them.  They're also getting fed GMO corn, getting candy/drugs as filler in their feed.  Many salmon are now GMO.  Chicken is being shipped off to China to be processed, then shipped back to US.  I saw a article last week that said chicken will go thru a bleaching process.............

Most health sites say to buy free range, organic & cage-free if possible.  Aldi's has some free range meats.  It can also be ordered on-line, depending on your area.  (I know because I had been looking into it trying to find good quality meat for my pets, since they are on a mostly raw diet due to the fact that the pet food industry can't be trusted to make healthy pet food anymore.)

The problem with free range, organic & cage free is the price.  I realize it's more costly to raise humanely & healthy than mass produce for biggest profit.............but the prices are crazy.

We have a meat locker where a lot of people order 1/2 a cow and a pig.  Or full cow and 2 pigs.  Once a year.  They put there orders in in advance and stop by once a year.  I've heard the meat is fantastic from there.  Sure you're spending a lot up front but the quality and savings in the end must be worth it.

The best thing I ever did was buy a freezer. I buy a 1/2 cow from a ranch that I know. Always great quality.
