It doesn't have to be lent to give up something.  I had to give up something and it wasn't for lent.

My son and I just discussed this. He's giving up soda's and I'm giving up sweets! He just ran across the street to buy a soda before going to church, lol, and I bought a cinnamon roll this morning for breakfast, and did not eat it! Rat's, I had my chance and blew it! About to head to church now... in a few for Ash Wednesday!

For one thing, I'm not Catholic or any related religion that believes in this practice.  So, I am giving up nothing, nada, zero, zip!  If I was to give up something, it would be more than some food item like I usually hear about.  It would be something like being judgmental or something like that.

I really thing when you wanna give up something it should be voluntarily, you should not do it because you are forced to or because others are doing it. Though i do not do lent but I have seen people who do it and they sacrifice stuffs like food, alcohol...

Well, trying to give up an addiction is no easy task at all.

Nobody is forcing anybody to do anything.  Apparently it is a religious thing.  It is totally up to you if you want to partake in it.  Like I said earlier, a girl I work with was talking about it but she was getting offended when people ask her what it is.  I always thought it had to do with catholics but I think that is wrong.  But how can you know if you can't ask somebody a question without them getting all offended and being a baby.
