I am a sports team fan??
« on: September 02, 2009, 08:29:05 am »
One thing that I never really understood is what makes someone a particular sports team fan?  The team's players are always changing or being traded.  Perhaps if you knew somebody on the team personally, I could understand a bigger interest.  I know that many times people are fans of the city's team that they live in.  I have also seen so many cases that people are "fans" only when the team is doing well!   I just do not get it when people say they have been a particular sports team fan for years and years.  I am not saying there is anything wrong with it, I just do not understand what the big deal is, it is just a game for fun?  I guess you can tell them I am not a big sports fan.

I don't understand what you mean by:
'I don't understand what to big deal is'
It's not a 'big deal' people like teams that they like? It's just partiality, a common trait in everyone. Surely you prefer one thing over another don't you. An example would be colors. I'm sure you have a favorite color. Or at least like some colors over others. It's the same kind of concept

I understand that people have their favorites/likes/dislikes etc.  I just do not understand WHAT/WHY makes someone a particular sports team fan over another team?  A team is just groups of people playing a game. While I have a favorite color, I do not have a favorite team.  Perhaps I should have left out the part of not understanding what the big deal is?  On the other hand, it IS a very big deal to alot of people.  Sports are a huge industry. I was just trying to understand what makes someone a Phillies/Mets/Eagles/Cowboys, etc. (any team) fan?

I'm not a sports fan at all.  I don't even watch sports but If it is their hometown team and they have pride in where they are from them I can understand why they would be a fan of their hometown team.

Well I don't know about other fans but I am a fan of the teams I like because of my father. He is a big sports guy. And as far as where it originated. I'm sure it has to do with locality. And there are fans who follow players. I for one live in the same city as Erik Cole the NHL player on the Hurricanes. He was on the Oilers last year and the Hurricanes the year before last. I switched over because I like to watch and root for him. Another factor is competitiveness. Whether or not a person has a reason to root for a team I feel most people have a preferred team because they are competitive and although they are not actually playing. They like the feeling of winning. Having your team win the championship is a great feeling :)

when it comes to football, i would kind of consider myself a "fan" of the washington redskins. and that's all stems from a friendly bet with my uncle over 10 years ago. i randomly picked a team and they won so it just became my team. i also like that team because no one else in my immediate family or group of friends is redskins fan, and they often play against the teams my family/friends like, so it makes for some interesting, yet always friendly, bets. now my husband is a fan of the tampa bay buccaneers and that stems from a long rivalry with his cousin, and his weird interest in pirate ships. but neither of us are the "die-hard fans" that are obsessed with their team, that take everything really seriously, and we never go to games. its just a fun thing for us to do from our home.

and, most importantly, we're not "fair-weather johnsons." we stick with our teams whether they play well or not, and more often its not.   ;D

Thanks, I particularly took note of the last two sentences.  That was a good explanation.  :)
