What is your opinion on givng kids cell phones??

My kids want one BADLY ???!!!  But we cannot afford it right now.

So what do you think is it really that important to give your kid a cell phone??  Almost all the kids have them now it seems like. :angry7:
It doesn't matter as much age as it does the maturity of the child and the position of him/her. With my wife and I's work schedule, it was best to get our son a cell phone. We told him we could only get the basic cell phone, and if he wanted anything fancier he would have to pay the extra. (Which he infact did)

It is a good idea for kids to have cell phone.  We can call to see what they up to, what they doing, you can even track them with a gps on the cell phone!!  New feature on AT&T!!  If you want to use smart limit, smart limit is great to limit the amount of usage, never call anyone but only the list of name on the contact list, and more!!

well i think the children shouldnt have cell phones

i mean it rly depends actually

there are phones i think i saw at walmart

for freeflys or some random name that kids dnt have teh numbers to dial out

but have 3 buttons. its either for their mom or dad and the other is 911

however nowadays most kids have cell phones and are texting and watnot

which they shouldnt cuz mainly cell phones should because mainly parents have the phone

who would they call?

plus depending on the provider they may have to pay minutes or for some such as metro pcs u have unlimited minutes

get him those prepaid phones..

i think walmart has one for like 20 bucks.. and the minutes is added only when u buy minutes...

i'd get my kid a phone.. but a prepaid phone.. just in case something happens.. like if he/she needs a ride or needs to go home from school.. or something..

I dont think you should give cell phone to kids. You see your kids everyday...why would you want to give a cell phone? They dont need a phone! Besides i think once you give them a cell phone...especially if they want it...they may think they can get anything!! Wait until the r teens!!

As some other people have said, get your kids a phone.

I've personally been involved in situations where I was glad I had a cell phone to call police/loved ones.  Its better than waiting at home worrying that your children are out and you have no way of contacting them.

Besides, some of the ones wiht bigger screens make for great flashlights.

a cheap "pay as you go phone" for Real emergencies might be in order- it won't be what they're looking for, but it can be a good safety measure.

i never got my phone til i hit the age of 20.. because when i was 18 i lost my first phone..

i've had phones before under my sister's contract but she cancelled it in no time..

but whenever i didn't have a phone.. i would always have no way of contacting my parents to pick me up..
so i wouldn't have any choice but to walk hom which is like 10 minute drive.. who knows how long that would take..
i never had any money either so i couldn't use any pay phones..

I guess a side effect of not having a phone to make you feel safe is that you stay at home more.  Positive for parents, I guess.

My daughter has had one since she was 13. I started letting her go to school functions and friends houses and i just felt she should have a way to get ahold of me if she needs me without having to look for a phone. I dont think there are any pay phones out there anymore!
