canned apples
« on: January 22, 2016, 06:34:36 am »
I never heard of them until now.
The kitchen has served them in our fruit mix bowls for the last couple weeks.
They may come in bags.
The juice makes them taste "different"
There is nothing better than fresh.

I remember my mom buying red apple rings when I was growing up.
I wonder what the dye was made from for those.

We had banana's, peaches, blackberries, strawberries and watermelons as I recall but I don't remember eating apples growing up.  Weird - however I believe it was because we ate primarily what my dad went to GA to get truckloads of peaches and watermelons.  We picked the blackberries wild on our property etc.  But yes I can't imagine bagged or canned apples except for pie filling maybe?

The only canned apples I have heard of are the ones used to make apple pie.  Are they like baked apples?

I really like the candied apples that you can buy in cans or jars now.

My neighbors have apple trees. And when the weather is right the apples grow. I have always canned apples when the frost doesn't get the blooms. sometimes we drive up the Espanola valley and buy them they are so good. They also grow  peaches and apricots. In fact here in N. M a lot of fruit is grown plus a whole lot of pecans. We are truly blessed. But our main crop in N.M. is green chili.

Never heard of canned apples.  I have seen the diced or sliced or applesauce.  I think I would enjoy the canned ones.

Why would anyone need to can an apple? They grow on trees!!! They are probably loaded with salt or other preservatives. I think I'd pass.

I am familiar with canned apple pie filling.  And it's something yet to be desired by myself.  I'd rather buy fresh and make my own pie filling.  Better yet visit an orchard and pick my own.  My Mom will pick apples, peel and freeze them in ziplock bags.  She used them throughout the year for baking.  I can definitely taste a big difference in the flavor of the apple the longer they are in the freezer.  Particularly when she makes apple strudel.
