overhaul computer
« on: May 07, 2015, 09:06:50 am »
Some one on the forum recommend using firefox, so I installed it a few months ago, and it kept crashing while I was earning or attempting to earn cents here. It brought me a lot of viruses too, so I reset the computer, early this morning to  factory specs..lots of old /new stuff to get used to and lot of problems along with that...but got firefox out of my computer, and was looking for old school browsers to put in..I was quoted maybe SeaMonkey or Opera..as a streamline  thing.
Suggestions?
currently running windows 7 home version, which i do not like...my other laptop has xp which I loved, but is not supported anymore...

I use firefox. I didn't get any viruses but if you don't wanna go thru that. Opera is nice. SeaMonkey, never tried it. Do you have any anti virus software? I recommend you getting MalwareBytes. It's really good. I have yet to install it on my dad's laptop.

Some older versions of Firefox are better then the new ones it all depends on your version of it.

I don't think it was Firefox that gave you any viruses.  If anything, Firefox actually tells you when you're about to visit a website that's a bit wonky and will stop you.  Of course, in the end, it's still your choice whether you want to visit that website or not.  As others have suggested, if you don't have any anti-virus and anti-malware software installed, now's a good time to think about it.

I know how you feel about XP, I liked it, too.  Before support disappeared for XP, I skipped 7 and went straight to Windows 8, then upgraded to 8.1.  I'm really looking forward to Windows 10, which will be a free download for the first year upon it's release this summer.

As far as browsers go, it's really what you prefer.  I've never used Opera or SeaMonkey.  I've tried Chrome and wasn't too impressed.  IE just sucks wind, LOL.  I've basically stuck with my Firefox or Pale Moon (which is also based on Firefox, but older version).

The reason why Firefox might be crashing is that you probably don't have a lot of RAM or the Flash player is obsolete.... Current Internet browsers like Google Chrome and Firefox are a resource hog in RAM. Opening a lot of tabs can quickly hogs resources... The standards RAM size you should be getting is a minimum of 4gb for an average user (however I think that it should be 6gb or 8gb). Check you task manager and see how much your computer is using on Memory (RAM) if its 60% using the internet then is fine. But if it is peaking at 80%% or a 100% you probably need to add in a ram stick.

Back when I used Firefox, I used to have my browser crash because most of the time my Flash player is obsolete. The reason was that Firefox automatically updates it browsers but Flash player for the browser might not be supported. Update your flash player in Adobe (not a sketchy website) to the most updated version

Also for your virus situation. Make sure that your windows firewall on and your Antivirus up-to-date. As long as you don't purposely random download things and don't visit any sketchy sites you should be fine. Most reason why you have a virus on your computer is not because of the computer, it's mostly the user. Wetware (aka the person behind the computer) is the most vulnerable to obtaining a virus

I use Firefox on both Windows XP and Linux with no problems. They push to upgrade Windows from XP, but it still works fine for me.
