It's not silly.  Pets have feelings and form attachments just like we do.  I'd take Midas to a shelter and let him pick out a kitty.

Several years ago I moved with both an elderly dog and an elderly cat.  They were best friends.  My cat, Tiny, helped raise my dog, Silkie.  The local queen brought her kitten to my porch for food.  I brought him in and tested the situation.  Tiny came up on the bed with us after I fed the little guy.  I took that as a sign of approval.  Four days later Tiny crossed over and left his friend in the frisky paws of Tuffie.  Silkie got a kick out of him, just like a grandparent would with a toddler.  He would dash back and forth through the house and she'd try to follow him.  She didn't get very far before he ran back the other way, through her legs leaving her standing there with a silly grin on her face.  He would lay with her and keep her warm.  I saw him as her caregiver in her end of days.

There will never be another Puck, but a new kitty could fill the hole in Midas's life.   :dog:  :cat:

This is a really good idea.   Will have to check it out with my local shelter when we decide we're ready.  It's been a rough couple of days.  Midas is wandering through the house and I know he's looking for Puck.  He's even gone to the spot where we kept Puck's dishes.    Hasn't been his usual perky self but I do think it's probably best to wait just a bit to get a new cat.   thanks so much

I want to thank everyone for the kind words.   It has helped to come here and read the comments.   For now I think we're going to wait at least a few more days.    Midas is feeling the loss.   We can see it in his behavior, he has even gone to the spot where we kept Puck's dishes.   Of course Midas is getting a lot of attention.   We've both been comforting each other.  Thanks again to everyone who has responded and understands.     :)

I can completely understand your feelings regarding the loss of your cat.  I even understand how your little dog must be feeling. I never had a pet as a child but got a bunny for one of my girls.  We had him eight years and he was a gentle hairball.  I never expected it but I grew so attached to him.  When he died, I cried for five days.  I still think of him some years later. I entertained getting another one even though my daughter had just graduated college, got her first job, and left home.  The only reason I didn't get another at the time was I felt I couldn't give the new one the time and attention I feel a pet deserves (I was working full time).  There are so many adoptable pets in no kill shelter that wold love a good home.  I have repeatedly hears that these animals seem so grateful when they are adopted.  Hopefully, you can go to one of these shelters and adopt a fairly young cat who can get along with a dog.
