Children and sports

Do you allow your kids to play team sports. I have a soon to be 2 year old and even though it is so far away I am afraid for him to play football. I would be ok with other sports though  except boxing.

I used to be a coach for kids sports, and we started as young as 18 months (it was parent tot sports). I now have a 4 month old son and have moved and the community here doesnt have anything till the kids are 3!

A lot of parents worry about football, but honestly kids are going to get hurt, I cant count how many times I got hurt just running around my house when I was little. When I was growing up I played softball and I got hurt worse in my 6 years of softball than some of the guys i knew who played football for 6 years. As soon as I can I'm putting my son in sports, inculding football, that way he can find out what he likes, if he likes it at all. You have to remember with boxing or karate or whatever they call it for little ones, they would be "sparing" (I dont know the correct terms) but they would be with kids there own age and their own size.

I don't have any children, but I can say now in early adulthood I regret my parents not encouraging me to engage in sports and other activities that would keep me fit, social, and out of the house. At the time I was glad for it, but now I have a bit of a different perspective!  ;)

I have 2 girls, and my oldest loved to do soccer, she tried Cheerleading, and she stuck with Track and Field thru 4 years of HS, she played soccer in HS and for a Club out until she finish and she got hurt, no concussion thank God, but any sport is a risk.  MY youngest daughter plays soccer as well, and she has had all type of injuries and all of them has been outside the sport LOL

I have two his-a sixteen year old boy and seventeen year old girl. My daughter just finished her twelfth year of competitive soccer and is heading into tennis season  She loved soccer because of the team element, working together, sportsmanship and communication. My son has played lacrosse for about ten years and is a dynamo.  He also plays tennis in the fall as long as it can be played around his high school and competitive lacrosse schedule.  We shifted him to a private school because the public schools are eroding so quickly.  His adjustment was instantaneous because so many kids new him from the dozens of leagues he has played on.  Be wary though...sports are very expensive! We figure that we average about nine hundred dollars a month.

Yes my 8yr old son has been very athletic since the age of 3 but legally could not play on a team until the age of 5 for insurance purposes. My older son played football but he was not a fan of playing. But my younger guy, he is my baseball and basketball star and I truly believe it builds endurance and confidence in young children when they play a sport. If I could have him play football now I would but it's only tag and my town charges like $120 to join so I think we will wait until its tackle football! lol

I regret not being in sports growing up. It would have taught me discipline, team work, self-confidence, and delayed gratification...all the things I struggled with in my early adult years.  :(

I believe in the early growing years all kids would benefit from being in some sort of organized sports program.
