Nook Color
« on: April 04, 2014, 07:42:20 am »
I have a Nook Color that the battery is completely dead on.  It is not in warranty.  I want to replace the battery myself.  Has anyone on here ever done that.  I have looked at the internet and am not sure how to get the back off.  I watched a youtube video but my device does not have a door to lift up on the corner.  So that was no help at all. lol.

Unfortunately according to B&N, the Nook Color does not have a user-replaceable battery. From their FAQ (http://www.barnesandnoble.com/u/Support-NOOK-Color/379003188):

7. Can I replace the battery in my NOOK Color?
No. The rechargeable battery in your NOOK Color can only be accessed and replaced by authorized service professionals.
8. Can I buy an extra battery for my NOOK Color?
No. Rechargeable batteries for your NOOK Color are not available for sale as an accessory.
9. What if I suspect a problem with my battery?
Do not attempt to access or replace the battery. If you suspect a problem with your battery, please contact Customer Service at 1-800-THE-BOOK (1-800-843-2665). Don't worry, your battery is covered by the 1-year manufacturer's warranty or the optional 2-year B&N Protection Plan.

I love how they say not to worry since it's covered under their 1-2 year warranty, but don't mention what to do after this time. Most batteries aren't going to fail in only 2 years, but rather will fail closer to 5+ years. This is a serious design flaw for not allowing the user to replace its battery, esp. if that is the only issue with it.

I still have my original Diamond Rio which was one of the original MP3 players (Back in 1998!) and my only problems have been space issues and connecting to a computer. It came with 32MB of internal storage and a slot for SmartMedia cards for additional external storage (and a few years later someone had developed some firmware which lifted the player's original restriction of the size of SM card that could be used, so I believe that I ended up with either 128MB or 256MB of external storage). Also the original software for connecting the Rio to a computer was developed for Win98, but that same developer that had made that firmware update also created a program that allowed my WinXP PC to connect with it.

Before I go off rambling (I know, too late), I just wanted to state that something in that price-range (I think both the Nook Color and the Rio PMP300 were priced about the same at $200 when they first came out) should be designed to last at least 5 years if not a good decade with battery replacement being something that the user can accomplish themselves and keep it running that long.

I do not know anything about the Nook Color but you can take it to a store and find out what to do.

Well gee ivstephanie. lol.  That is sort of why I wondered if anybody knew if I could do it myself.  It's basically useless.  Doing a google search I found where people have said it can be done.  They say to pry the back off.  But I am not sure if that is a good idea.  I thought maybe somebody might have actually done it.  My SIL gave it to me a few months back.  It has been dead for several months.  Even charging for several days it won't come on.  I can turn it on if I am next to a plug.  But that does me no good.  SO since it is pretty much worthless I might try to get the back off and see what I can do.  Of course they are going to tell you THEY have to do it so they can get more money.  Even if it were possible for a person to do it themselves.  Oh well.

Sendmicheck - I don't know what store to take it to.  I don't know if there is a B&N store around if there were they might could do it there.

Well dancer.  We shall see.  I will probably try to get the back off.  It is useless to me as of now.  So I might as well.  I will let you know how it goes.  When I done the Google search some claim you can take the back off and get a battery from Amazon.  But the directions are not real clear and I thought if someone on here had done it I could get better directions of what to do.

Well hot dang!

DANCER139 - Check this out
http://portables.about.com/od/ebookreasers/ss/Nook-Battery-Removal-How-To-Change-Battery-Of-Barnes-And-Noble-Nook.htm

I followed these directions and the back popped right off.  I used a flat screw driver.  I just got to get a itty bitty phillips to get the battery out.  I am pretty sure you can get them at Amazon.

My SIL gave me this one when I helped them move.  Then we figured out it wouldn't come on.  lol  But apparently you can do it yourself.  Although I am pretty sure BN didn't want us to figure that out.

Good for you!  Just think of the money you saved by taking the back off and getting a battery.  I would love to know how much Barnes and Nobel would have charged you!  I have the same nook, so far so good, but when the battery dies I now know what to do.  Thanks countrygirl for the heads up!

You are welcome.  I am fixing to head to Walmart and will see if they have a battery there.  Probably won't.  I found one on Amazon and it is close to I think $12.  Not bad.  I may email BN and tell them the battery is dead and see what they say. lol.  Would be interesting.
