What would you do?
« on: March 01, 2014, 12:45:59 am »
There was a story, on the news recently, where a 15-year old kid in middle school was gifted academically so he was studying for his ACT; however, he had a social disability where he couldn't conform in the public school system.  He was unable to approach his teachers so he was failing all his classes because he neglected to turn in his assignments.

This kid has the potential to be the next Bill Gates; however, he might end up "falling through the cracks" in the public school system because of his social disability.  It would be sad if his only option in the future is to be on SSI because of his social disorder.

The people within the school system aren't very willing to accommodate his disability.

What would you do if you were his parent?

Have a great day!

It's a sad situation in most schools. I am afraid this happens all over the US. Don't get wrong, some teachers and school systems have excellent programs, but others fall short!

This is not an easy situation. The public school system is not able to meet the needs of students with social problems since they do not always see what is going on. That leaves the parent to be the child's advocate. They either need to get him into a private school that is small enough to meet his needs or find someone in the special education department that will fight for the child's needs.

I'd home school them. I often got bored with the school system (I live in California). It's pathetic. I would often day dream in class because it never went at a pace that stimulated my mind. I'd underperform and I fell between the cracks. I mean, I graduated college and all, but my outcome would have been much better had the school system/curriculum been better.

Thats hard but I would probably try to find another school in the area that may help more or look at options of home schooling some how.  Its just sad to see how some schools dont do what it is they are suppose to do!
