I doubt that a 12 year old wants a Barbie (next year she'll be 13!.) She's probably interested in cute clothes and hairstyles and boys. A 10 year old boy may still be interested in cars but he will be growing out of it, but he may collect cars when he gets older. The best thing to do is ask them in a roundabout way what they like. You can't go wrong.

I think you would be safe with the hot wheels but I think you might want to think of something a little more grown up for the 12 year old. Are they into music? Maybe an iTunes gift card or posters of there favorite band members. Gift cards are always a safe bet with today's teens. Good luck.
