How should I travel

I'm going to Michigan to visit a friend of mine for christmas. It's very expensive to fly cause I didnt know I was gonna go there till my friend had invited me. So now my options are either going by train or by bus cause it's much cheaper. I was gonna go by train, but first I have to spend the night in chicago,cause when my train gets in there the train to michigan will already have left. stupid but that's how it is. and then someone at my job told me trains never run on schedule. Like they'll always be delayed for like 4-5hrs. so now i'm thinking of maybe going by bus. Is this a better option? Plus I'm a little scared about going on a train cause of the wreck they had on the one in New York. The driver fell asleep. Oh my gosh. But I guess going on the bus the driver could fall asleep too and we crash.   
But my question is this---I'm going from richmond,va to michigan and which is quicker-- train or bus? Can someone please help me on this matter?  Thank you very much all that can help. plus could weather delay a train or bus.?

Megabus is really cheap usually, so that could be an option for you. 

There is not always a universal cheap way to travel -- planes, bus and train can all be the cheapest or most expensive option based on route traveled and time of travel and how far ahead and even how and when you book.

I would find several options -- bus, megabus and greyhound, train, amtrak, others?, planes throught travel sites like expedia and orbitz and check each serveral times each day and find the cheapest option and book it.

Since you're not flying I'd take the train it would be faster.  If you take the bus you'd probably have to take several.  The ride would be more comfortable than a bus.

The train would probably be quicker but the bus would probably be cheaper.  Have you checked the prices and schedules yet?  Both could be affected by the weather.
