should I sell Or give away?

I have a like new Kenmore 6 speed washer and dryer. I am considering either selling them for $500 or as seperate pieces for $250 each. I am willing to neg. as well; but the problem is I am not sure should I sell them or give them away to a charity and use it as a tax write off? what do you think FC family?

It depends on your individual tax situation, but I think you would probably make more money by selling the things rather than using them as a tax write-off. But of course, there is also the "feel-good" factor if you donate them.

I think it's an individual thing. We recently purchased a brand new washer and dryer and whilst I did initially think we could probably get a little bit of money for our old ones, I then thought, actually we probably won't get that much money and there are people out there who need a washer and dryer but can't afford the intial layout cost. Even at a second hand store they sell for $100. So in the end, we gave it away to someone who kept having to go back to their parents house to do their washing. Now, he can do it all independantly at his own home. I feel happy about that.

I have given away many things over the years and I wish I had sold some of them. I have recently moved and will be glad to have a yard sale here. I didn't want to do it in my former neighborhood because of the HOA.

That would depend On a couple of factors. You always have to consider your factors first. How long are you wanting the items to be there, Would they be of use to you, Your current financial situation,if you know anyone that is in need of a brand new washer and dryer and finally how much labor your willing to put into this. I would also explore your options. You could also consider Trading it for something you want and in that matter you would also have a win win. I would make a list of pro's and con's of buying and selling even trading if you consider that option. If you are looking to get rid of the item fast.. I would consider selling. If your looking for a little extra cash i would again consider selling. I would only reccomend giving away if you know somone who can actually use it and has a rough financial situation Say a friend or a relative.Otherwise it would Pretty much be throwing away money. Now if you consider Trading as a Factor It would probably be time consuming and it would not get the item out of the house fast. Again i would write a list of pro's and con's and cosider your factors. Alot of times people give things away and regret it later down the line because they end up becoming a little short on cash. I like to give my things away as opposed to selling.  The tax benefit is nice, and there are a lot of folks out there who need things.

Well I guess you need to ask yourself how bad do you need the tax write off    If you sell them at least that money won't be taxed  but the if you have a really needy family in your area maybe someone that has been out of work for a very long time, health issues...you can always check with a local church for someone in need
