Halloween 2013
« on: October 23, 2013, 09:32:15 pm »
Halloween has never ment much to me. At the age of 12 I figured I was too old for trick or treating. Nowdays you see teenagers and adults doing it. Ever since my daughter was born, I knew that it would start to mean something the day she got to go trick or treating for her first time. That will be this year, and I am very excited about it. I think she is going to have a blast. Of course she is only 2, so we will have to do it fairley early, assuming that it is not too cold. What are your kids going as? Mine is going as elmo.

Elmo sounds really cute. I remember the first time I went out with my dad. I was a witch, in a Raiders shirt, haha. Didn't have much else that was black. No kids myself but after 10 years we're living in a neighborhood where they'll be kids trick or treating.

I remember my son used to bring pillowcase for his candy collections, but now that he's in college he dont want to do trick or treating anymore. But I love to give candies to whoever pass by our house. So much fun.

My first costume was as Batman (actually, I think I went as the Caped Crusader several years in a row; he was my favorite superhero)... After I came back home, my mom asked me how I liked it. I told her that I was mad... Because my cape didn't work!

When my sister got old enough to go out too, we'd always go together (at least when we were young), and at the end of the night, we'd dump both bags of candy into a big pile and I'd sort the candy and divide it up between the two of us so that we'd each get the same assortments of candy (we'd do the same thing for Easter too). At the time I think I was sorting the candy for more selfish reasons (making sure that my little sister didn't get more candy than me) but looking back, I was probably doing the reverse since I'd probably grab a couple of candies at each house while she'd only take one (or actually the first few years, she was so shy that the neighbor would usually be the one plopping a candy in her little bucket).

When I got to be about 12, my parents also said that I was too old to go out any more. Although that first year when they had kept me home, one of my friends had a great idea. The next night after Halloween, we dressed up and went door to door for "Leftovers Day". I think I raked in the most candy that year, because when some of the neighbors answered the door and heard what we were doing, they'd give us all of their leftover candy (esp. those that didn't have children and didn't want so much leftover candy at their house).

I've seen people of all ages trick or treating.  My favorite is when a couple brings a newborn and is looking for candy.

Hope you both have a great time!  I always loved trick-or-treating and missed it when I grew out of it.

My daughter is going as a mermaid.
Thank goodness I was able to find a pre-made costume.
