Yes, I think it is true that reading by sunlight is better for you than reading by lamplight. This is why I always try to go outside to read in the summer. I set myself up in a little pergola my husband built in back of our house. It has a little table and chairs I can use for reading, doing puzzles, knitting, etc. in daylight.

Is there any information out comparing LED/florescent/energy-efficient bulb lighting as it relates to eye health?
