can you tell a friend they can't cook?
« on: June 03, 2009, 04:25:58 pm »
Oh man I can't believe it I had some of the worst cooking ever..and in this day in age and with all the cooking shows on tv how is that possible?  I just held on to that plate of food hoping a stray cat ,bird or dog came along. All I could here was how does it taste and oh everyone loves my cooking I wondered were those people were human.. I didn't want to embarras her by saying anything because she was just about finished her plate so I simply said that I was so full from the taco bel I had for lunch that's why I couldn't eat all my food and that I should really finish at home during the late show. I didn't know what to say and could not take another minute holding that plate of food so I got wings and flew out of there.  But really what would you have done I don't like to waste food but that stuff was absolute GARBAGE and that's exactly where it went... but  seriously I won't eat from her again ..what would you have done?

Be honest, or it will happen again.  I'm a huge fan of being brutally honest. It upsets people a little at first, but they get over it, and appreciate that you did not lie to them.  It sounds like she has been lied to enough.  If you want to be nice, get her a cook book.... GOOD LUCK

Have her over for dinner, fix her a plate of crappy food, ask her how much she enjoyed it and see how she responds.....lol

Nah, I'm kidding....I would just tell her the truth and then laugh it off with her. Think of something she's great at and say something like "Well at least you're great at ______ "

the problem with this, is some people don't know how bad their food is....

to them it's great.....

to them pudding is as good if not better than creme bruelle...

and why have a particular wine with dinner if beer goes with everything....

and hamburger helper is a a homemade meal......

if you are one of these people dont get offended......

i'm not turning my nose up at you....

I also like pudding, beer and sometimes some hamburger helper (but not all mixed together)

but knowing what good food is takes teaching...

that being said.... DON'T TELL HER THAT HER FOOD IS BAD!!!!!

Instead, invite her over when you're cooking (assuming you can cook  :P)

and let her "help you cook"......

and share "recipes" with her....

help her to learn what good food is....

and how to make it.....

and I'll bet she doesn't make that same "thing" that you were forced to escape from again!!

When it comes to food, I know what I like and what I don't.  I am very outspoken, and believe in telling it like it is.  If I didn't like the offerings, I would make it known (as diplomatically as possible, of course).  If offense is taken, then so be it!  After all, there's a good possibility that I would have saved a good portion of humanity from the next culinary disaster!

Possibly not directly tell them, but I would probably give them some recipes.  If the food is awful, I am not going to eat it just to appease the cook.   Now that is punishment.

Too bad someone whose taste buds are dead told the cook a lie like that.

Definately. It is your job as a friend to be honest and save your friend from future embarassment. If the person can't cook, you don't want them to make a fool of themselves in some way, and so it is up to you to tell them the truth. It might be a bit painful to them, but I'm sure that they will be greatful for your honesty. If you are going to tell them , just don't be mean about it or say it in an insensitive manner, as that will only hurt the person even more.

It's kind of hard to tell a person that they can't cook especially when they think they can .
I have had food that was horrible do you hear me horrible. So from that day forward when ever I
go to someone's house I never eat I just ask for something to drink.  :P

i think that's your best bet :) you don't want to offend your friend.. or hurt their feelings.. but you also don't want to suffer through bad food ;p lol. share recipes and do some cooking together.. maybe suggest some of your favorite cookbooks/cooking shows and whatnot.
