Fruit salad tips?
« on: July 07, 2013, 07:35:06 pm »
It is a lot of work and expense to have fruit. Would love to hear some easy fruit salad tips that keep the fruit from browning, tasting all alike, etc. I hate the process of chopping it up and not being able to store it for more than a few hours. I also hate to pile in sugar and pudding mixes bc that negates the healthy aspect.

I'm a smoothy gal, not much on fruit salad.
If you have extra smoothy, you can freeze it.

You can soak your fruit in a mixture of water and lemon juice to prevent browning. You can easily freeze melon *bleep* and such also.

Tisk, tisk... Here I thought this topic would be safe from profanity!  ;D Just remember that you can say spheres or scoops, but heaven forbid you say b@ll$ in this forum!

As Skyenkit said, mix in some lemon juice to prevent browning. Freezing fruits, esp. melons, helps keep the moisture in the fruit instead of being release into the general mix. Segmenting oranges in their natural wedges also helps keep their juices inside the fruit. Also using an apple corer (those tools that you push down on top of an apple to cut it into wedges and remove the core) helps in reducing the amount of cutting work for apples and pears. Smaller fruits, esp. berries, are nice in that you don't have to prep them much (maybe just making sure the stems are removed). Finally to save on the cost, if you can pick your own, you can get a lot of fruit much cheaper than at the store.
