Has anyone ever given you something and said "you'd better like it."
It isn't meant as an insult or sarcasm.
validation?? haha.

First of all, whether they want me to like it is not material to me.  The point is if I will like it.  Being told that "you'd better like it" is like telling me I am supposed to accept whatever it is at face value.  Otherwise, I would have been happy with my grandmother's cooking, and I wasn't.  She grew up in an environment where, if you asked for something, you were going to sit there and eat until it was gone.  My aunt just turned 70, and she told me of the time her grandmother (my great grandmother) cooked a tomato pie.  She asked her for some and was told she was going to sit there until she had eaten that pie.  There is no way, shape, form or fashion I could have done that. ??? :o :o ???

Some older people are stuck with a lot of bad sayings and habits.

I think it depends on how "you'd better like it" is said. My dad has said that to me a few times but he has never meant it as a threat. He was joking.

Oh dear, I'd hope they were joking.  I'd feel awfully guilty if I didn't like it.  That's the way I was programmed.   :sad1:  I wouldn't want to lie to them or hurt their feelings...   :-

My response would have been i will tell you later if i like it. Never been told eat or sit there. My grandma and mother were good cooks. I did not like fat on my meat and was never told to eat it. But too cut it off, the dog will like it. And i never forced my kids to eat it. take a bit and if you don't like it fine. We'l try again later. But ometimes i added it in with some other foods and they ate it. Moms have to be sneaky.

Seems more like a statement of "I put myself out in some way" to get you this so ......... I think people tempted to say that should say "I HOPE you like this".

This older person has never heard that saying.  I would never say that to someone to whom I am giving a gift.  I might say "I hope you like it."

Well sometimes my buddies say it but its mostly as a joke something along the lines of " You better like it because I'm paying for it" and I also say the same from time to time.

I've never said it but I've heard it. I totally think its them looking for validation. No one wants that awkward silence after they've just given a gift.
