I don't think anyone should smoke where people are eating. I smoked for 20 years and so glad I quit. Not only does it smell bad it's bad for your health. Wish my only sister 1 year older than me had quit maybe she would not have COPD.  :BangHead:

I do not think people should smoke in restaurants. But I think this should be out of respect for those around them, not by governmental force. If a business is privately owned, it should be up to that individual to determine whether or not the patrons should be allowed to smoke. It should be up to him to determine if he wants to make it a smokey place or a smoke-free establishment. I think it would have more business if no smoking was allowed, but it should be the owner's preference.

I smoked in high school and off and on for a few years after, but mostly just socially. At times, a certain smell will make me want one again, but I haven't smoked in a long time, probably 7 years, and won't ever again. I have a granddad on one side and a grandmother on the other who can't go much more than an hour without a cigarette. I just do not want to ever be that addicted.

I posted in February that a 45-year-old niece of mine was battling Stage 3 lung cancer from smoking.  It quickly progressed to Stage 4.  She died on June 1.  Her husband and children are devastated, and I now have a hole in my heart.  We miss her very much.

I am glad to live in a city that bans smoking indoors in restaurants, stores, bars, etc.. As a non-smoker I really appreciate it. I never thought smoke really bothered me but a couple years ago I went to Las Vegas and I had a headache most of the time from all the smoke and was 100% better when I came back home.

I think people shouldn't smoke at all but especially when in public. It's extremely rude. I smell smoke and get it blown in my face all the time in the nyc sidewalks. Somking is just a waste of money and unhealthy. Secondhand smoke can be more deadly then firsthand because you're getting the worst smoke blown in your face. I'm pretty sure restaurants in nyc banned smoking inside though.

if smokers actually smelled the cigarette smoke, it would make them quit. the smell of cigarette smoke is repugnant. I used to like the smell of it when I used to date a lady that smoked. a cigarette hanging from a lady's mouth is now a turn-off for me.

I don't believe people should smoke at all. It is bad for their health. I am a former smoker.

I am a former smoker and I wonder why the former smokers are the most intolerant about smokers.  I am not but many of them are.

I think people should not smoke at all. However, I am not desirous of forbidding people to do as they please as long as it does not harm others. I also am not all that cranked about the evils of second hand smoke, though I am not of the opinion that it is nearly as harmful as a lot of people claim, I know that even if it is slightly damaging it should not happen.

Basically, I think smoking in confined places is wrong as it effects others. If a place has a filtration system that keeps the air clean (few places do) or in an outdoor environment I have no problem with people destroying their own lungs, hearts, etc.

I also agree with some others that I don't think the government should be so involved with what a private company chooses to do. Esp. since all of this information about the dangers of smoking has come out, I think society is already changing to wanting a healthier environment. So in order to have a thriving business, an owner will try to meet the demands of their customers by having a smoke-free environment without government intrusion. I was very disappointed when our state of MN passed a law banning smoking in all buildings of employment. In the Twin Cities, prior to the law, there was a bar that had spent an enormous amount of money creating a special smoking area that was completely enclosed and had a state-of-the-art filtration system set up to clean the air in that room. The next year, the law was passed and the bar found themselves wasting all of that money trying to cater to all of their guests. I also know of other bars that even before the law went into effect chose to become smoke-free, putting the lie to the idea that without these laws, businesses (esp. bars) would always allow smoking or else go bankrupt.

The new law was also ridiculous in that it restricted smoking even in tobacconist shops -- except for the fuzzily defined "sampling" that was permitted. There was a controversy over a tobacconist shop wanting to set up an enclosed lounge area that allowed smokers a pleasant area to "sample" the products. The problem was that by setting up this smoking lounge would encourage the smokers to stay for longer periods of time, thereby no longer just "sampling" a product, but actually spending time enjoying the product. Because of this the smoke shop was not allowed to create such a lounge in their establishment (that may have been a city ordinance issue to more clearly define how they interpreted the new law that allowed "sampling" of products in these tobacco shops, however it still seems ridiculous to worry about smoking in an establishment specific for tobacco sales).

I also know that in Rochester, MN the county had further expanded the law to prohibit smoking within 5 feet from a doorway of such a place of business. Since in the downtown areas most of the doorways are within 5 feet of each other, there was a minor protest about the new law where some smokers stood 5 feet outside of a bar in the only place that would also be 5 feet from any other door -- which was directly in the middle of a lane of traffic on the road.

I'm just scarred that when the government gets a whiff (no pun intended) of the damage from so-called "third-hand smoke", there'll be new laws preventing smokers from even touching anything without first washing their hands (see http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/06/24/thirdhand-smoke-dna-damage-cells_n_3474797.html for an article about this new "third-hand smoke" idea).
