Water from the Gardening Hose
« on: September 02, 2010, 11:54:56 am »
Many hoses are made of polyvinyl chloride, a material that contains lead, which can leach into the water.  Lead exposure can cause subtle but permanent effects on the brain, so it’s best to minimize it wherever you can.  Because water that’s been standing in the hose has higher lead levels, run the hose for a minute or two before filling your child’s pool to flush away most of the lead.  Never let your kids slurp straight from the hose.  Even if you have a “safe for drinking” hose, still let the water run for a while since water pipes can also contain lead.

Thats some very good advice. People should never drink from a water hose as well as a bird bath! They can both kill you!

i think its so funny that the things we all did when we were kids are now considered so unsafe. we drank from hoses, didn't sit in booster seats (or even use seat belts for the older generations) consumed high fructose corn syrup and trans fats, the list can go on and on and on

I would never drink water out of a water hose.  Even if I allowed it to run for an hour.  I think it is just plain unsanitary to do so.

I never knew that thanks my kids always drink from the hose when they are outside playing. I won't let them any more.

lol yea and look at us now seems for the most part we all turned out pretty good.

I think when I was a kid, I used to drink from the hose a lot...I let it run for awhile though to make sure no Spiders or bugs were in there.

Growing up on farm we did the same thing but we also wanted to wait till we got the cooler water. Hot water is just nasty lol

I would never drink water out of a water hose.  Even if I allowed it to run for an hour.  I think it is just plain unsanitary to do so.

As an adult...yeah I feel the same way, even as a teen! It is nasty..eww

I dont know even today I can see myself out on the farm and drinking from the hose. It never hurt me growing up. but then again we had well water which was the best.

The same is true for some older artificial Christmas trees.  Some leach out lead as they age, so it's best to replace really old ones.

I did not know this either.  I am sure that I have drank from the hose before, but I never made a habit of it.
