There are many different kinds of self-employed business endeavors. Don't expect to earn a full time salary from sites like FC, although this is a good site to earn the money needed to start your own business.
I think what a lot of people don't realize is that, at least at first, it takes a lot of commitment to get your business going. It is definitely a full time job, in fact, you have to be willing to put in more than 40 hours a week if necessary. Since you are your own boss, you have to be motivated enough to keep yourself going even when you'd rather be doing something else. I know you see a lot of marketing hype about all these businesses where you can make a full time income by working a few minutes a day, but those are just lies, at least when you are first starting out. Maybe after you have a huge customer base, and bring in tons of residual income, then those claims would be true.

Being self employed is the best way to gain control of your work and find something you enjoy doing.  Beware though - you won't only work for 9 to 5.  Being your own boss doesn't end at 5:00 PM. :P

I'm technically self-employed. I do housekeeping. So far I only have one client who is moving away, but I will get a better paying job next month. I'm not sure if I want to make it a business where I can sustain my family or just do it part-time on the side until I get a full-time job.

I have had three corporations with as many as eighteen people working for one of them.  All were related to the financial and real estate industry and were severly impacted by the economy in 2005-2007.  As I struggled to bring them back I was forced to take night time jobs to keep money coming into my household.  I couldn't let go of these companies because they had made so much money but regulation and the economy as well as working third shift jobs eventually took it's toll on me. I am making fairly good money now working for someone else and don't have nearly as many headaches.
