Paalm 91:14-16
« on: May 09, 2012, 06:51:17 am »
While struggling through the day waiting on test results ... this is the verse I found to lean on.

Those who love me, I will deliver; I will protect those who know my name. When they call to me, I will answer them; I will be with them in trouble, I will rescue them and honor them. With long life I will satisfy them, and show them my salvation. (Psalm 91:14-16)

Long ago, I ceased being amazed about how promoting such false hope can 'comfort' religious adherents.

"When one person suffers from a delusion, it is called insanity. When many
people suffer from a delusion, it is called Religion."
-- Robert M. Pirsig
One can lead a horse to water however, if one holds the horse's head under, that horse will drown.

Paalm 91:14-16 is a very comforting verse for someone in that situation.  I was in a similar situation 26 years ago when I was sitting in a hospital family room waiting for test results for my unborn child. I was lead to a verse that talked about a sick woman touching "the hem of his garment" and she was told "all is well".  I hung onto that hope because it was all that I had to hold on to and my child was OK, as promised.  He is now a grown man.  I have never forgotten that moment.

There was no intention of implying that such false hope isn't "comforting" to religious adherents, (although there was the converse contention that such is of no comfort to those who don't believe such religious claims).

I hung onto that hope because it was all that I had to hold on to and my child was OK, as promised.

It's good that the situation turned out okay for your child however, that outcome cannot be validly attributed to religious beliefs, (hope derived from faith and faith deriving from a belief without evidence).
