Child and Elder Abuse

Is it just my imagination, or are the instances of abuse of our children and seniors rapidly increasing?  Some people tell me it is like the statistics of almost everything else - it has always gone on but the news media brings it to our attention so much more and faster now than in previous generations.  That may be true, but it seems to me there is not a day that goes by that I don't hear of some horrific thing happening to children - sometimes multiple times a day.  And the thing that really blows me away is that so much of the time the abusers are parents or other family members.  It also seems the abusers are using more and more deviant methods for the abuse and murder of these helpless innocents.  Why do you think this is happening so much nowadays?  It breaks my heart.  I am one of those who thought I would never have children and was finally blessed after 12 years with my precious daughter.  I remember the nights of aching and tears, wanting to have a child so badly.  And there are those when would give almost anything to adopt a child.  Is there anything that can be done to stop these atrocities?
