Sick Children
« on: November 20, 2011, 07:31:27 am »
Well after a long afternoon and night of hot colds with my 1 1/2 yr old I think we're in the clear. Pumped him w/juice, gave him a honey elixir, took a nice bath, used a wet cloth, kept him nice and warm for 45 min then would take his blanket off for a few to help break his fever, did skin to skin and of course infant ibuprofen.

What are home remedies that you use when your kids are sick?

Alcohol bath to break fever works really good.  :) Peppermint tea grows wild where I live, works well for young girls when their tummy is upset.  Vicks in the humidifier!  :dontknow: I guess it helps them breath a bit better. ???

having sick kids is the worst.... it's hard to know what to do with them.
if congested put vicks rup on his/her feet before bed.... works amazing.
lots of fluids, lots of lovin' and popsicles or frozen applesauce is a nice treat.

I take care of my 2 of my nieces and 1 of my nephews 5 days a week and I have a line of organic teas made for children that are each named for a specific illness. Their grandmother gave them to me because she purchased them on sale and figured I could give them a shot. The kids swear they work and within 24 hours, they're significantly well. I tried the one for colds and made a cup every couple of hours (I figured I'd give it a try since they say it works and drank much more because I'm obviously not a child. lol!) They worked for me. :)

I rubbed his tummy and back with the vicks baby rub but have never heard of doing their feet, I'll have to try that. We did do a popsicle but it wasn't til then that I thought I should invest in the pedilyte kind.

Do you have the brand? I would like to try those. I did end up giving him celestials sleepy time but he did not like the taste of that!

They're called Traditional Medicinals. I give them Cold Care throughout the day and Nighty Night before bed time. Whenever they have a sore throat (or my niece has a chorus performance) I give them Throat Coat.
Myself and the kids think they're tasty.  :)

I usually try not to give tylenol when my kids are sick.  We give them natural herbal teas, cool baths, and ginger to settle their stomach.  This seems to work well, along with giving them fluids often throughout the day.

I never had children but I remember having Vicks Vapor Rub slathered all over my chest and near nostrils. And, I remember, too, one of those machines that the Vicks steam or something coming out of it. And, chicken noodle soup and lots of rest and sleep. Recommend too NO milk (dairy products). Grapefruit juice....not orange juice.

They're really easy to find. Around here, they have them at Walgreen's, CVS, Jewel, Dominick's, etc. Let me know how it works out. :)

Besides teas, there are other herbal remedies my mother-in-law buys. Since my children are too young for cough medicine, we use a homeopathic one. Also have homeopathic ear drops to ease the pain of ear infections in little ones. All purchased at chain drugstores. Having sick ones is tough, especially the ones too little to tell you what's wrong  :binkybaby: we have always done tepid baths. If your child is getting dehydrated from vomiting, be sure to take him or her to the ER, they have medication to stop vomiting.  :cat:

My mom was always big on humidifiers, Vick's Vaporub, and medicine.
