I have heard of a movement for high schoolers to be required to do community service in order to get their HS diplomas.
I don't know where I stand on this potential requirement.
It makes sense to give them a taste of contributing back to the community ... but at the same time to force someone to do it, doesn't.
Would you want a volunteer forced to do something they don't want to do working out in the general public giving a bad image to the project.

At my high school I was required to do 40 hours to graduate. I ended with 250 though due to the ability to count my time in the school graphic design center making stuff for the community as community service.

For me, community service wasn't enough. I was also required to write a report about it if I wanted to graduate.

I think community service should not be required. If someone decides on their own that they wanted to do it, that is fine but it should not be forced onto students.

Community service should be done voluntarily not because it's a requirement.

I don't think it should be a requirment in order to graduate, Teenagers have enough things to do in school berfore they graduate.  It would be a good option if they want it to be on there school file to go to college.  My cousin did communitiy service by helping with summer school before his senior year and he really enjoyed it, but as for me I wouldn't want to do it.  Everybody is different and want a different exsperience from high school.  The school in Gainesville have other ways for students to contribute to society one way was recycling and donating food and the students who want to participate do and those who don't, don't.

I was a straight A student, in band 4 years, a few clubs at school, and worked 24 hours a week.  There is no way I could have done community service.  Forcing people (especially teenagers) to do something they don't want to is a bad idea.
