I had always paid to have mine done - the year I bought a house, I paid to have them done, the CPA made numerous mistakes which I caught (luckily) he then charged me a small fee for making the corrections after I had already paid him. Then I started doing my own. My daughter married a CPA - needless to say he done them for free. Now I am on disability & don't have enough income to file. I find that odd since I do have a lot of medical bills, my tithing to church & small donations to chartities.  I find this unfair.

I buy the tax program and do it myself.  Saves $$$$$ and tax preparers don't know all your business.

;D I go to a professional Tax place to get my taxes done. I hve a couple of friends who went to a hole in the wall to get their taxes done. The people that worked there told them a date to come back and pick up their tax return checks; they went back and low and behold the company was gone. They took off with the checks and my friends had to call the I.R.S. and report them. So, not only did they learn a valuable lesson but I did also. You just can't trust every Tom, *bleep*, and Harry to do the right thing when it comes to your money. Just because the sign reads Professional Tax Service doesn't mean squat. Look for CREDINALS!!! :peace:

I've always done my tax prep work.  I developed a spreadsheet program that ties the several schedules I use to each other and the Form 1040.
The only cumbersome part of this is having to rework the schedules every year to match change from the IRS -- but at least that way I read the forms.

I've thought of using Turbo Tax etal, but I suspect that my Schedule D reporting would be beyond the capacity of those programs.  (Lots of stock sales that involve wash sales.  Messy reporting. ) I've avoid professional tax preparers for the same reason.

Turbo Tax... each year since 2006. The program is great and I've double checked with other software and it's always succeeded in getting back my interest free loan to the government.
