Just something I enjoy talking about - I had my son at home with the help of a wonderful midwife.
I chose a midwife because when I went to interview doctors they didn't really get that I wasn't one of their patients yet! They sat with me for about ten mins and then I was on my own. I felt much more comfortable with the hour sessions with my midwife... plus the fact that she was a woman! I had my son the morning of the season premiere of Dexter - That night he snuggled with me and I got to watch it with all my family and friends on my comfy couch!

What are everyone else's thoughts on this subject.... or do you even know what a midwife is!?

I know a couple of women that have had their children with the help of a midwife. I wanted to but wanted to give birth somewhere other than home, like a birthing center. The midwife that I started seeing was in a practice with an OB/GYN and could deliver at a hospital (since we have no birthing centers) but halfway through my pregnancy she lost her privileges at the hospital and could only deliver at home. So I ended up going with the OB/GYN instead. I was happy though, maybe because I was delivering in a hospital already anyway. My Dr didn't have any problems doing what I wanted to do vs the "standard procedures". So I still ended up with the kind of birth that I wanted....no episiotomy and no epidural and no pressure to do anything differently (from him at least....the nurse kept trying to push at least a consult with an anesthesiologist but I said no). I wouldn't be opposed to having a home birth as long as I was REALLY close to a hospital, just to be safe....better safe than sorry!

That's great that you got to have the birth that you wanted! I'm so happy for all the women who have a good experience with birth. A lot of women I talk to don't remember a thing or are really unhappy with the outcome.... I really enjoy educating women about things to expect and learning about the various procedures while they  are pregnant so they aren't pushed into something they don't want to do last minute.

my son was supposed to be delivered by a midwife at a birthing center but due to complications about halfway through my labor we were rushed to a hospital instead. everything ended up okay but it was scary enough that with my daughter i decided from day one that i would be delivered at a hospital. and funny thing was my delivery with her was so much easier than my son's... thanks to the wonderful powers of the epidural!

Nothing wrong with midwives. My niece was deliever by a midwive. That's the way her mother wanted to deliever her.
