This is my game plan (Mom stuff)
« on: January 24, 2011, 12:24:35 pm »
So in order for my kids to take turns (I haven't had my 2nd child yet, but she will be here soon) I plan on like having a dry erase board and have the kids take turns on days - like Monday Darren's name goes on the board, and if they can't agree on an activity, then I'll say, "Well today is Darren's special day, so we will do what Darren wants to do."  and vise versa (sp?) - then the next day, if they can't agree, we do what Claire wants to do.  What comes to mind with this idea is the park - I can't follow 2 kids around at once and right now with one kid it's so easy because I can go wherever he wants to go, and I don't want there to be constant battles - and I also don't want one child to think I always do what the other child wants to do.  So what do you think about my plan?

While I only have one child on a day to day basis I did nanny for awhile and so "had" four children for several months. LOL For the most part I noticed that there wasn't too much of a problem especially at the park. They would just play together (even to the point that I wasn't there) and move around from play structure to play structure as a group.

I think that your idea is good as long as you leave room for flexibility if one of the children is having an especially crabby day. You'll have lots of time to work out what works because your daughter will be able to go with the flow for quite awhile probably until shes about 18 months. :) By the time she is ready to be running around the park your son will be old enough to be able to play "on his own" within your sight of course.

What I have found with children is that best laid plans often go by the wayside and it's best to just go with the flow.

I have 3 children, and for the most part, they do not dictate activities.  It's ok when they are small, but it will lead to problems in the future.  For example, my in-laws always let my daughter choose where to eat out when she was little, as she got older it became McDonald's all the time, which is bad for alot of reasons.  Also, what if it is someone's special day, and they want to go swimming in November?  As far as playing, I let them play on their own, and only intervene when there is a problem.  They take turns choosing what to watch on tv, but even them, it is with permission.  Also, if it is an activity that is fun (park, etc), chances are both your children will want to do it anyway.  Keep in mind, this is just my experience.  The best advice is be flexible, and don't sweat the small stuff.  You'll find things that work for you and your family, and you'll find things that don't.  Even if it's not what other people do, if it's right for you, then go for it.
