I would say 16. But a tracphone is always a good place to start. That way there is no monthly bill.
I didn't have a phone until I was 17, and that was because I was paying the bill myself.

I think it depends. When they are out with friends and away from the house a lot, then maybe it is a good idea to get them one. Also it would depend perhaps on the child's maturity. They certainly don't need a fancy one that could ring up a big bill until they pay for it themselves. Unless of course you are willing to trade paying the bill to have all of the features in exchange for good grades.

I think maturity level has a lot to do with it especially if it is a plan with limited minutes. Maybe start with a pay to talk phone with no fancy bells and whistles. If they can handle that responsibility they can then get on the family plan and get a phone upgrade.

I used to say that there would be no reason for a child to have one until they were old enough to have a job or drive. However... there really is no such thing as payphones anymore, so in case of emergency, I would say the same age that you allow your child to go somewhere without adult supervision.

I think it all depends on the maturity of the child.  And sometimes, parents, it really does simplify your life if your child has a phone no matter what age.  If they are in sports or at friends houses a lot its easier to keep in touch.
