My best guess would be because they are trying to use the alchoal as a means to get away from something that is causing them pain.  Whether it be consious or unconsious.

It's a sad state, and I'm so grateful I don't have that illness.

I went through a period like that.  I don't know about other people, but the one person who said they may do it to hide the pain was right on in my case.  It is the same, I believe, with many drug addicts.  By God's grace, my life was changed and I quit drinking (and smoking) almost cold turkey and with no after effects.  I can't even stand the smell of liquor or cigarettes now.

Good for you that you stop all that, so now when you wake up in the morning you don't feel terrible, thank god for that.

People use it to escape from reality. My friend's an alcoholic. She had to go to the hospital three times already. Whenever she's mentally distressed she uses alcohol to save her from the pain. I was a victim myself on numerous occasions. I used it to become another person. Everytime I became drunk, I didn't have a worry in the world; for once I was happy. But the happiness is a lie. It's all fake. You have to realize you have to face your problems, not run away from them. You get nowhere in life and end up hurting others along your way... as my friend is hurting everyone around her now.

Couldn't say it better myself.
