Classical music = increased Intelligence?
« on: November 23, 2010, 06:24:03 pm »
Does (listening to) classical music make a person smarter?

I've heard that it does, either from somewhere on TV or the Internet, or somewhere else, but never researched it, other than the "google search > yahoo answer" I did/got, which stated it does not. Is this a myth or is it true?

I'm not really sure if this is true or if this has been scientifically proven.

Is there any empirical evidence to whether this is true or not?

I'm looking for the kind of evidence that proves that classical music directly makes someone smarter, or improves/increases their intelligence level, be it IQ or whatever.

Now you've got me curious too. I have a lot of friends who are in the music field. I'll ask them when I can and get back to you. Otherwise, this is all I could find-

Stealth,
I don't know about all classical, but I do know/remember a very respected study years ago that was conducted and resulted in the term The Mozart Effect. It showed an increase in IQ points and a correlation to Mozart. I don't have time right now, but if you do a search, you should be able to find info on this.

Sorry! Falconer, I should have known to look at your link BEFORE I posted! :-[ Well, backs up my redundant statement, eh? :P

A lot of research had been done this area. Colleges are still doing studies in this area. Listening to classical music, doesn't necessarily make a person smarter, the music helps the person focus better in daily tasks. The brain is wired in a way that will aid/trigger the concentration/focus of the person. Not all of classical music is created equal. For example: Bach is better than other classical music because the affect it has in your brainwave activities it more effectively. But all classical music over all is it better then music that is distracting like, rap, rock, hip-hop, metal...etc.
That's why people studying for a test will have classical music in the back ground to help them focus on studying the test material. A lot of Asian parents to be will place head phones on their stomach & play classical music in the belief that it will help with their child's brain wave stimulation. They also read & do mathematical problems out loud believing that the child will hear the mental exercises from the parent. I believe that classical music does help in aiding the person's focus & may increase their intelligence. Better focus leads to better learning skills leads to better grades & encourages the person to work harder to refine skills.  I use to work with severely disabled children/persons some of them in which all normal stimulation is cut off b/c they where born not able to see, talk, move, & sometimes  born severely deformed. I used classical music called brainwave music alpha, beta, delta to help those who can hear stimulate their brainwaves. Some clients' seemed to be able to calm down, some w/high blood pressure were lowered, some who had trouble sleeping were able to sleep sooner, some who couldn't focus on simple tasks was less distracted. So, I say  YES  to classical music!

Well, I do know first hand that any type of music, listened to AND studied will increase your intelligence, but that also depends on the word itself. Listening to classical music is wonderful, but studying the composers every move and thought, seeing it on paper, having it explained to you and understanding why he/she choose to compose a particular piece, and finally playing the notes the way they were intended to be played.......I definitely believe that will give your intelligence a freakin' MEGA BOOST!!!!
Heres the thing about the classics for me.  When I was in college, I got a chance to play oboe, which is pretty hard to do(my band director "commanded me" to learn, LOL! ) which meant I was able to play MORE of the classical, asside from parts written in for the saxophone. So I did it, and it worked, and I recorded alot of stuff when we went on tour. Now, out of all the music we played, the  best part for me is hearing the same music in a movie, or a commerclia ect...-it gives me goosebumps everytime! My mind reverts back to the hours of work and practice, doubt and confidence, the music theory, history, and background of the piece and the composer, great times and not-so-great times spent working that music out, and I say to myself....
(this is gonna sound stupid, I know we are talking about intelligence here!)

"HEY, we played  that Carmina Burana, or that Sheherezade, ect. It was awesome!"
or
"OMG! THAT'S (insert composition here) playing on (insert media here)....Whaaaaaatttt!!!?"

...your heart instantly flutters with rememberance and joy, and you feel a connection to every memory, moment, thought, people, places or things associated with what you heard, because you worked on the same piece just as hard (or less) than they did, and you brought it together for others to hear as a magnificent, finished product! It triggers the memory, music does. Therefore, it increaces your intelect, because you want to share information about that experience with others that might not know what the hell you are talking about!!!!
Goosebumps!!!

I believe it does make people smarter especialy new borns and little children.

I know someone that wanted to deliver their baby to classical music so they did.

At age 2 the child was showing great interest in music so the mother bought him a piano shortly after the child was playing the instrument

so good it was unbelievable and as time went by this kid until this day and he is 14 years old he's like compared to bethoven and those famous

people that's how good he is and he also produses and composes his own notes and music and sings on top of all this.
