What a crying shame they had to endure all of that.  I have read a few books (biographies of adults) written about their life changes when having to leave their family and tribes and go to those boarding schools.  These are people who were not treated fairly.  Sure, they could learn and be taught English and academics, etc., but to try and take away their identities of their own heritage went too far.

 Being a teacher, I feel it's important to share with my students some of these true stories (written on their level.)  The students, in return, have a better appreciation of these other cultures and peoples and what they went through.  I also have read these type books about children/adults during Hitler's reign, and how they hid, were helped, and survived, in the most amazing ways.  Thanks for sharing this, walksalone.

JC, if you actually teach the whole un-embellished truth to your students I promise you that you will be my hero for life.

I will be the first to admit my short comings and accept any hatred or intolerance toward myself, but then I don't fight for myself......I fight for The People, and they are truly the most awesome beautiful people you could ever expect to encounter and they deserve better then the out of sight out of mind treatment.

There are many issues way over due for being addressed, I sincerely appreciate any and all the help I can get to bring these things to light.
