I thought I had replied to this topic already, but it appears that I haven't.
I've always displayed a preference for dogs, but in all actuality I could be deemed more a cat personality. I love dogs; my husband and I are discussing getting our daughter a dog for her third birthday next year, but I don't particularly enjoy how needy and affectionate dogs can get. I definitely tend toward needing the alone time to myself. However...not a big fan of sweeping up fur and vacuuming it off my couches constantly, either.
And cats can be so insubordinate. You can say, "no, no don't sit on that plant that came to the new world with the pilgrims over four centuries ago, you'll kill it!" yet...the cat could care less. Disappointed that the cat is devouring that mouse it expertly caught right in front of you? Meh, whatever. A dog, however...they aim to please.
I guess I didn't answer the question. I'm not entirely sure. They both have their positives and negatives. :-
