Looking for a Good, Contemporary Book to Read

So I'm looking for a good, contemporary book to read.  I mean a book I can talk about and expect other people to know what is going on. I'm not really looking for anything Victorian, or "super-classic".

I was thinking something along the lines Jurassic Park or Water for Elephants. Anyone else have any suggestions?
