motivation
« on: February 11, 2010, 07:24:38 am »
Specifically for exercising. I just read the other post and thought I might be able to get some good suggestions on how to get motivated or what I can use as motivation. I have a hard time getting myself in a routine to exercise but really need to do it. So, any suggestions?

music helps immensely, as does having a partner if that works for you.  even the littlest bit counts for something, and it does build on itself as you go along.  good thoughts for success!

I agree with this one, music works wonders for me.

My biggest problem is actually getting up and going, but I'm almost excited to go everyday now. I just thought if I wanted to get any healthier I'd have to get up and do something about it. Once you start seeing results that's when the motivation really sets in. I think to myself, every step you take and every weight you lift is taking you closer and closer to a better you. So I push myself a little more, go a little further, a little faster. And it gets me really motivated. It helps to play tricks with your mind.

Keep a log of your progress, you will see your results on paper as well as the mirror.

Are you trying to bulk up or slim down?

You could also always find something else that might work for you. If conventional exercising and the like don't work for you, find something that you find fun. Karate, kickboxing, dancing, biking, a good active hobby could help you exercise without it feeling like exercise.

yeah, i think for some people the word "exercise" just wears people out.   Try to get motivated by deciding what exercise means to you.   Doesn't always have to be reminded as running on a treadmill or elliptical.  Go ride a bike! Thats great exercise and its lots of fun!

Seriously (from my previous post), a partner seems to be the best. You both tend to motivate the other. Better yet is joining a team sport. Sometimes outside jobs, health clubs, even some bars / restaurants will sponsor different team sports. The sports will give you plenty of exercise but the "game" aspect will keep it interesting. Also, by being a member of a team you feel more motivated to go to the practices and games; you tend to feel that you let down not just you, but the entire team if you don't show up. Even if you're not the star player, you missing the game might mean the difference between a potential win and a definite loss due to forfeiting for lack of enough players.

Definitely trying to slim down. I know, though, if I gain muscle, it will help burn more calories.

I like all these ideas. I think I might get a membership to the Y and make my hubby come with me. Then I could have him to keep me going. If I at least make it to the Y then I should be able to get myself to do something there. I think I will take my mp3 player too. I wonder what kind of classes they have? If they have something like karate or a defense type martial art, I might join one of those.
