Why?

Why do we tell our kids to never take candy from a stranger, YET, 1 day (Halloween) we let them take candy from strangers ?

That's a good question.  On Halloween we are with them when they are trick or treating and most parents check the candy when we get home.

I always take candy from strangers. I got kidnapped a lot as child but the few times that I wasn't it was pretty sweet.

That's how mom and dad did it back in the day. We never thought twice about it. Now you just have to inspect it if you're concerned. 

That's my take. Or in the alternative, you could eat all the candy and you wouldn't have to worry about your kids eating it if there was a problem.  Problem solved. You're welcome. BTW, that might make you gain a few pounds, but what does that matter if you're protecting your children?
